Giants' Michael Strahan to seek seat on Montclair's Township Council

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (AP) — New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan is rushing toward a new goal: a seat on the Township Council.

Strahan, 32, said Sunday that he would seek an at-large seat on the governing body in this Essex County community. The election is scheduled for May 11, and his campaign platform will emphasize preserving historic structures, improving recreation areas and controlling development.

He and his wife, Jean, moved here four years and have restored a 1906 Georgian mansion in the township's Upper Montclair section. He has been active in several local and national charitable causes, including the Starlight Children's Foundation, the American Cancer Society, and Housing Enterprises for the Less Fortunate.

Strahan, who has spent 11 years with the Giants and holds the NFL single-season record for sacks, was not immediately available for comment.

1. I Was Born in Montclair
At Montclair Community Hospital, which I understand is now closed. My family lived on Montclair avenue near the train station until I was around 6 months old, when we moved to a house my father built outside Morristown.

4. Hmmmm
Lived in Montclair for some 20-odd years. And yes, I know Montclair Ave. Wonder which mansion they are talking about.

I worked with the city council to get a noise ordinance. It was a good experience.

Controlling development? There's nothing left to control!

5. Lots of Big Homes in Upper Montclair
My grandfather used to deliver mail in Upper Montclair before he retired in the Early '50s. One of his favorite people on his route was Allen B. DuMont, an early TV pioneer who created the DuMont TV network - later Metromedia, now FOX.
