UConn football player fatally stabbed
Source: AP

STORRS, Conn. – A University of Connecticut football player died Sunday following an on-campus stabbing, hours after the team's victory over Louisville.

Twenty-year-old Jasper Howard of Miami, a junior and starting cornerback, was stabbed during a fight early Sunday. A message posted on the university's Web site said the fight and stabbing happened near Hillside Road, which is near the center of the Storrs campus. The perpetrator was still at large.

University president Michael Hogan told The Associated Press that the stabbing is a tragedy for the entire university community. He says state police are working with campus police.

1. Awful. Better campus security at U-Conn must be instituted.
This is nasty. It is a tragedy, of course.

2. You'd hardly think it
I used to consult for the bookstore, supporting their IT department. UConn is basically in the middle of nowhere, very beautiful, very rural. Storrs is a tiny town, about the size of where I live in NC, maybe a little bit bigger. Blink and you'd miss it.

Some of the nicest, most polite people I ever met was when I went up to do onsite work. You could stop anyone anywhere on campus for directions (it's not that big) and get a smile and "You're welcome" to your thanks. I have some nice pics of the last time I went up when the new bookstore was first opened. Matter of fact, the bookstore has a live cam outside where students go wave to their families.

This really is mind-blowing for me and I'm sure for the entire UConn family. My heart goes out.

3. I grew up in CT...Storrs was about 20 minutes away...
...it was so rural back then, still mainly is, although it has grown quite a bit since then and with it comes problems. This really sucks.

4. Thoughts go out to him, his family, and the entire UConn community
As a fellow Big East school alum, we are all mourning this loss together.

6. Thank you.
This tragedy happened out front of the student center, following a dance celebrating Homecoming weekend! This young man was a friend of my Grandson's, (three of which attend U CONN.) They are in a deep state of dismay, grief and anger. This is so very sad, and we hope they catch the "perp" soon. After such a wonderful win over the Kentucky Cardinals, to go from celebration to tragedy is devastating!

7. My thoughts are with you, your grandson,
his friend's family, and all of UConn. I have so many wonderful memories of working on that campus and have so many nice contacts up there. I know this hits really hard.
