Senate votes to take up jobless benefit extension
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON — After weeks of political haggling, the Senate agreed Tuesday to take up legislation that would give people running out of unemployment insurance benefits up to 20 more weeks of federal aid.

Senate Democrats, saying that 7,000 people a day are exhausting their benefits, called on their colleagues to move quickly to a final vote. Republicans insisted they get a chance to offer amendments on the benefit bill and other issues.

Also in play was the possibility the bill would be used as a vehicle to extend another policy that has been central to the Obama administration's efforts to revive the economy: an $8,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers.

The vote was 87-13 to bring the bill to the floor. Sixty votes were needed to pass that procedural hurdle.

1. The Cognative Dissonance is overwhelming on this.
I can see extending homebuyer benefits for deployed military, but what does this have to do with unemployment?

I am guessing that this was the bone given to the GOP to get them to back off all of the UI funding re-writes they wanted to do.

3. Another damned legislative BOONDOGGLE...Tying Unemployment Benefits to Real Estate Cartel Interests!
Edited on Tue Oct-27-09 07:24 PM by KoKo
GACK... The Unemployed deserve more than Goldman-"Sucks" or the rest of the Big Bank and Insurance (AIG) Conglomerate Bail Outs.

But, the National Assn. of Realtors and Chamber of Commerce always get their "pound of bloodsucking dollars" for every dollar they put into their lobbying. Seems we Dems get something like .01 Cents on our dollars. :-(
