1 dead after car runs gate at Ariz. air base
Source: MSNBC

One man was killed and another injured after they drove a stolen car through the entrance to Luke Air Force Base in Arizona and security forces opened fire, police said.

The car went through the entrance without stopping as required and security forces then used a vehicle to set up a roadblock on a bridge leading to the operational side of the base, near Glendale, Capt. Jerry Gonzalez, a spokesman for the base, told msnbc.com.

Police said the car drove directly at a security officer who feared for his life and opened fire.

10. I didn't see where it said 'private security' - just 'security officer'.
I assume it was base police.

15. It's cheaper
Need for guards goes up and down, so contracting you can have as many as you need without having to employ a bunch you would have to lay off from time to time.

The base police are still there, patrolling and other police things. They're also ready to come to the gate in case something actually happens.

Using soldiers for this is somehow now considered a waste of resources. I was on guard duty a LOT during the 80s.

They're backed up during high alert times. I remember a civilian-guarded gate once, but there was a humvee with a .50 machine gun about 200 feet back on a rise.

Interesting this post didn't have the barriers. The guards push a button and a 4-foot high wall pops up down the road in about 1/2 second. They can stop a dump truck cold.

16. Don't know about Luke AFB
But private security guards work the gates at Walter Reed, which always struck me as sort of odd.

23. Private security doesn't get out of the Air Force after four years
When it comes to defending bases against attack you have three options:

1) get a school-trained Security Police officer to stand guard at each ammo bunker, airfield gate or other thing needing guarded. Advantage is they're graduates of the SP school so they know what they're doing; disadvantage is the Air Force doesn't have enough of them to go around.

2) use a zoomie pulled out of the ranks to guard these things. Advantage is they're cheaper than rent-a-cops; disadvantages include the need to let the guy take the next day off so he doesn't fall asleep while he's putting your plane's engine back together.

3) hire rent-a-cops, which is what they do. Advantage is they know the base better than the troops do, security is their whole job so they're good at it, and it falls in line with the Air Force tradition of outsourcing as much service support to the civilian sector as they possibly can. If the Air Force has an endstrength of 300,000, they want all 300,000 zoomies out there either shooting down bad guys or doing something directly related to that mission. If they can job it out to civilians, they do so.

21. The gates were open before 9/11. Most bases you could just drive right on.

22. Many dont. The naval weapons station near charleston sc
comes to mind. They have had several incidents there. They probably never made national news.
