JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- South Africa's white supremacist leader Eugene Terreblanche was bludgeoned to death by two farm workers Tuesday evening in an apparent dispute over wages, police said.

Terreblanche, 69, was leader of the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging movement, better known as the AWB, that wanted to create three all-white republics within South Africa in which blacks would be allowed only as guest workers.

The AWB was a semisecret organization for years. When it "came out" in 1979, the movement displayed its Nazi-like insignia and declared opposition to any parliamentary democracy.

Terreblanche would arrive at meetings on horseback flanked by masked bodyguards dressed in khaki or black and became a charismatic leader for a small minority that could not envision a South Africa under the democratic rule of a black majority. At one rally his guards, dubbed "storm troopers" after the Nazis, brandished guns, police batons and knives, prompting the government to announce it was "looking into" the actions and attitudes of the movement.

Terreblanche threatened to take the country by force if the white government capitulated to the African National Council.

Eugène Ney Terre'Blanche (January 31, 1941 – April 3, 2010) was a Boer-Afrikaner who founded the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging during the apartheid era in South Africa. Until his death, Terre'Blanche remained leader of the recently reactivated AWB and continued to push for an Afrikaner secessionist state within South Africa.

Ancestry
The progenitor of the Terre'Blanche name ('white land' in French) in the region was a French Huguenot refugee named Estienne Terreblanche from Toulon (Provence), France, who arrived at the Cape in 1704.<1> The Terreblanche name has generally retained its original spelling though other spellings include Terre'Blanche, Terre Blanche, Terblanche and Terblans.<2>

Eugene Terre'Blanche's grandfather fought for the Boer cause as a Cape Rebel in the Second Boer War, and his father was a lieutenant colonel in the South African Defence Force. Born in Ventersdorp, Terre'Blanche later became an officer in the South African Police, even being a Warrant Officer in the Special Guard Unit, who were assigned to members of the Cabinet.

Opposition to government policies
During the late 1960s, Terre'Blanche increasingly opposed what he called the "liberal policies" of B. J. Vorster, then Prime Minister of South Africa. In 1970, Terre'Blanche, with six other Afrikaners, founded the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging, commonly known as the AWB. His oratorical skills earned him much support among the white right wing in South Africa; the AWB claimed 70,000 members at its height.<3>

Terre'Blanche viewed the end of apartheid as a surrender to communism, and threatened full scale civil war if President FW de Klerk handed power to Nelson Mandela and the African National Congress. When De Klerk addressed a meeting in Terre'Blanche's hometown of Ventersdorp in 1991, Terre'Blanche led a protest, and the Battle of Ventersdorp ensued between the AWB and the police, with a number of people killed.<4>

In 1993, Terre'Blanche led an armed invasion of the World Trade Centre in Kempton Park while negotiations were in progress.<5>

The AWB were defeated while invading Bophuthatswana to prop up the autocratic leader of the bantustan in 1994 and, subsequently, Terre'Blanche did not follow up on his earlier threats of war.<6>

Media image
Terre'Blanche and the AWB were seldom out of the media during the 1980s and first half of the 1990s. Terre'blanche's powerful oratory and apocalyptic images of race war often featured, with the image of heavily armed AWB members parading in uniform, sometimes hooded. However, this image of the rise of the far right was not the only image projected by the media, which increasingly ridiculed Terre'Blanche and his supporters.

Terre'Blanche was lampooned in the 1991 documentary The Leader, His Driver and the Driver's Wife, directed by British filmmaker Nick Broomfield. A sequel by Broomfield, His Big White Self, was first broadcast in February 2006. Terre'Blanche was also interviewed by Louis Theroux in the episode 3.3 Boer separatists of the BBC series Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends.

In 1988, the AWB was beset by scandal when claims of an affair with journalist Jani Allan surfaced. In July 1989, Cornelius Lottering member of breakaway AWB group Orde van die Dood, orchestrated a failed assassination attempt on Allan's life by placing a bomb outside her Sandton apartment<7>. Broomfield's 1991 documentary claimed that Terre'Blanche had an affair with the Sunday Times journalist; a claim she denied as well as her portrayal in the documentary. This led to Allan taking libel proceedings against the documentary broadcaster Channel 4 in 1992 in the London High Court. During the trial, several transcripts of their alleged sexual relationship appeared in the South African and British press.<8> Terre'Blanche also submitted a sworn statement to the London court denying that he had had an affair with Allan. Although the judge found that Channel 4's allegations had not defamed Allan, he did not rule on whether or not there had been an affair.<9>

Terre'Blanche was widely ridiculed after he was filmed falling off his horse during a parade in Pretoria.<10>

In 2004, he was voted no.25 in SABC3's Great South Africans, a list of 100 of South Africa's favourite personalities according to the public. His presence amongst others such as Hendrik Verwoerd triggered a national debate. The controversy led to the cancellation of the SABC television series.

Controversy
In his book "Warfare by Other Means," author Peter Stiff alleges that Terre'Blanche was covertly working for the police force, and later military intelligence, to expose right wing forces' strategies and personalities.

Amnesty
Following the end of apartheid, Terre'Blanche and his supporters sought amnesty for the storming of the World Trade Centre, the 'Battle of Ventersdorp', and other acts.<11><12> Amnesty was granted by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.<4>

Conviction and prison sentence
On June 17, 1997 Terre'Blanche was sentenced to six years in prison for assaulting a petrol station worker and the attempted murder of a security guard. One of only three whites in the Rooigrond prison near Mafikeng, during his time in prison he became a born-again Christian and claims he has moderated many of his more racist views.<13> Terre'Blanche was released on June 11, 2004<14> and the AWB website claims these court cases and other scandals involving him were fabricated by the 'Black Government and the left wing media'.<3>

Poet
Outside of his political career, Terre'Blanche has also been known for his poetry. Prior to the 1994 multi-racial elections, his Afrikaans-language works were on the state syllabus of Natal schools. Although upon his release from jail, he quoted Wordsworth's poem I Wandered Lonely As a Cloud. He has previously released a CD of his poetry collection and most recently a DVD.<15><16>

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African white far-right leader Eugene Terre'blanche, who fought to prevent the end of apartheid in the early 1990s, was beaten and hacked to death at his farm on Saturday, his party said.

Police said two black workers in custody for the killing of Terre'blanche, 69, appeared to have been angry over unpaid wages rather than having had a political motive for the killing.

But his Afrikaner Resistance Movement linked it to the recent singing of an apartheid-era song with the lyrics "Kill the Boer," by the head of the ruling ANC party's youth league in a row that has drawn fears of growing racial polarization.

"That's what this is all about," said Andre Visagie, a spokesman for the AWB. "They used pangas (machetes) and pipes to murder him as he slept."

Terre'blanche, who described himself as a Boer, was the voice of hardline opposition to the end of white minority rule, but had lived in relative obscurity since his release from prison in 2004 after serving a sentence for beating a black man nearly to death.

A notorious white supremacist who once threatened to wage war rather than allow black rule in South Africa was hacked to death at his farm yesterday following an argument with two employees. Eugene Terre'Blanche's mutilated body was found on his bed along with a broad-blade knife and a wooden club, police said.

"He was hacked to death while he was taking a nap," one family friend, who did not wish to be named, told Reuters.

Local media quoted a member of Terre'Blanche's Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging party (Afrikaner Resistance Movement, or AWB) as saying that the 69-year-old had been beaten with pipes and machetes. Police said two males, thought to be workers on the farm, have been arrested and will appear in court on Tuesday.

Terre'Blanche, with striking blue eyes and white beard, was the voice of hardline opposition to the end of racial apartheid in the early 1990s, and the AWB was infamous for its swastika-like symbols and neo-Nazi anthems. But he had been in relative obscurity since his release in 2004 after a prison sentence for beating a black man nearly to death.

It's just an amusing coincidence. I assume he was of Huguenot descent. A lot of Huguenots ended up in South Africa during Dutch colonial times, and so quite a few Afrikaners have French last names. I knew a few who had French first names, too -- passed down through the generations, I suppose.

Black and White doesn't even begin to describe the racial and ethnic tensions going on down there, the problem with South Africa has always been that at any given time it has been ruled ruthlessly by a hegemonic minority which is eventually overthrown. Not all the white people were racists. There were millions who applauded when Nelson Mandela became president, I and my family rejoiced.

I worked with 250 volunteers at a polling station in Pretoria North during the election. We had to be guarded by the army and the police as we feared a backlash from the right wing, racist nutters.

Unfortunately everybody is tarred with the same brush. The murders on white people have escalated so much that my husband and I decided it would be safe to leave with the children while we could.

The years and years of apartheid killed South Africa, it killed any chance of it being a successful country. We who were against it were in the minority, we were ridiculed by the right wing religious assholes, (much like the tea baggers here in the US). We were disowned by our families and committed social suicide because we were FOR equal rights and vehemently against apartheid.

VENTERSDORP, South Africa - A top South African white supremacist said the death of the group’s leader Saturday amounted to a “a declaration of war” by blacks against whites.

Eugene Terreblanche’s supporters blamed his slaying on a ruling party official’s performances of an apartheid-era song that advocates killing white farmers. Police, however, say it appeared to be a wage dispute that led two of Terreblanche’s farm workers to bludgeon him in his bed Saturday.

South African officials are trying to ward off any rise in racial tensions 10 weeks before their country of about 50 million enters the global spotlight as host of soccer’s World Cup.
