Feinstein Slams House Democrats For NRA Deal

The introduction of new campaign finance legislation in the House has met with mixed reviews owing primarily to the disclosure exemption added for the National Rifle Association. But despite the criticism expressed by a host of good government groups -- some of which have begrudgingly said they would support the legislation -- the effort didn't seem to be in much political peril. Until now, perhaps. On Wednesday morning, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Cali.) became the first Democratic lawmaker to publicly come out against the NRA deal.

Statement from Senator Feinstein:

'I strongly oppose any special exemption for the National Rifle Association in the DISCLOSE Act. The purpose of this bill is to make sure that elected representatives are not beholden to special interests, yet here is special interest # 1 receiving a deal to exempt it from an otherwise very good bill.

This is bad policy. The law should apply to the NRA, just like any other group. If the NRA, or any similar group, is going to spend millions on political ads, the American public has a right to know who is funding them.

The bill is the DISCLOSE Act, not the 'Everyone Except the NRA DISCLOSE Act.'

The NRA claims they need an exemption to protect their First Amendment rights, but that argument simply doesn't hold up. The Supreme Court has stated clearly that although all are free to speak and advocate their positions, when a group runs ads for and against candidates, disclosure requirements are appropriate.

In my area I received a call from the Democrat running for state office in my area, Leonard L. Bembry, and the call began by describing how the candidate supported gun rights and pointing out how important gun rights were for people in northern Florida. Bembry has a "A" NRA rating and of course he got my vote. He a good man and a great representative.

Another example is Bill Richardson the current Governor of New Mexico who ran in the Democratic primary for President.

The National Rifle Association official wasn't sure he correctly heard the reporter's question over the clatter of gunshots from the firing line.

"You said the NRA is a traditionally left-wing organization?" Dwight Van Horn said, incredulously repeating the question.

The gun rights group - traditionally not a left-wing organization, to answer the question - lent its endorsement Monday to Gov. Bill Richardson, a Democrat.

Richardson may not need the boost, as he is well ahead of GOP challenger John Dendahl in polls and campaign financing.

But as he mulls a run for president, Richardson's history of close relations with the NRA could set him apart from other Democrats seeking the party's bid.

As Richardson noted, he's not the first Democrat to receive an NRA endorsement.

"But there haven't been very many," he said.

Others have tried to court the so-called sportsman vote. John Kerry took reporters along on a hunting trip during the 2004 presidential election, though it may have been footage of the Massachusetts senator's windsurfing expeditions that stuck in voters' minds.

The NRA endorsement, announced Monday at a West Mesa shooting range where hundreds of law enforcement officers from around the world took part in an NRA-sponsored shooting championship, wasn't the first time Richardson has garnered the group's backing.

"He's been a pretty solid guy on the gun issue," Van Horn, a member of the NRA's board of directors, said.

Whether that record could woo pro-Second Amendment voters into the Democratic fold in a national election is another question.

"He has treated us first class," said Kayne Robinson, NRA's executive director for general operations. "What the implication of that will be in national politics is beyond my pay grade."

A news release announcing the endorsement cites Richardson's support for a law that allows New Mexico residents to carry concealed handguns with a permit.

Richardson said he has earned a concealed-carry permit himself.

"I am not packing today, though," he said, "because I have plenty of State Police officers here to protect me."

Notice that the NRA does give some Democrats a high rating.

Obviously Republicans often get higher NRA ratings but that is merely because Republicans have wisely cornered RKBA as their issue and many Democrats have foolishly supported draconian gun laws. Gun control is a losing issue which has cost our party many important elections. In many close elections, Democrats have lost because of their stance on gun control.

The tide is working against Democrats on the gun control issue. It's time to stop shooting ourselves in the foot.

None of the states that have passed "shall issue" concealed carry have found a problem with the law that is serious enough to overturn the law.

Many feel the Supreme Court will overturn Chicago's draconian gun laws later this month.

Also notice that since states have passed laws that favored gun owners the violent crime rate has fallen significantly. This may not prove that more guns = less crime as that fact may be caused by many factors such as better policing. But still over the years the number of firearms in our country has increased dramatically. Therefore, it would be logical to say that more guns does not equal more crime.

On one hand, she's stated her support for the outright banning of firearms. She once stated that, if she had the votes, she'd introduce a law tomorrow requiring the immediate seizure of every gun in America. Her political stance isn't just anti-NRA, it's among the most strongly anti-gun in Congress.

On the other hand, she's a trained in firearms use, has a CCW, and has admitted more than once that she carries a gun in her purse and that her bodyguards carry firearms.
