Kid Condoms: Provincetown Likely to Limit to 5th Grade and Up
Source: ABC News

A Massachusetts school district is going ahead with plans to give condoms to students even without their parents' consent, but because of an outcry from Gov. Deval Patrick and others the district will consider excluding students in grades one through four.

The Provincetown School District -- the smallest in the state of Massachusetts -- will take a "relook" at the sex education policy that created a firestorm this week, according to School Superintendent Beth Singer.

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick , a Democrat, intervened Thursday in a fracas over giving condoms to Cape Cod elementary students as young as first grade.

-----

On Thursday, the governor called Singer to weigh in, saying sex education programs should be "age appropriate" and that "parents ought to be involved."

1. First grade? My daughter is going into first grade. I wouldn't even know how
Edited on Fri Jun-25-10 11:57 AM by Jennicut
to give a talk to her about what a condom IS. She is 6!
Now, sex education is way important. Kids in high school and junior high, yes, they should get condoms. But kids as young as 6 is really pushing it.

8. I wonder if this was a negotiating strategy.
If they only asked to give the 6th grade access, they'd have nothing to bargain with if they got a no.

15. Maybe. And I can understand 6th grade, being 11 or 12. Even that young I can understand it.
But 6? 7? My daughter is actually quite mature for her age. Everyone kids me that she is like a little adult with all her questions about the world in general. But sex ed? No concept of any of that yet, aside from liking a few boys in her class as friends and not thinking they have cooties anymore. That is about it.

10. The only "sex-ed" they should get is how to tell if someone's touching them inappropriately and how
to report it.

That's it.

3. Pretty much.
Edited on Fri Jun-25-10 01:11 PM by Mz Pip
6 year old boys would probably giggle, "Put it on my, what???" upon learning what they were supposed to do with them and the girls would say, "Ewww, gross."

4. This world doesn't need any more f**king babies. Condoms should be on every street corner. Once a
girl gets her period, she better be carrying condoms. I don't
promote it, but I'm sick of seeing
this population getting bigger from children having babies.
Personally I don't know why anyone would want to have another
baby when you look at the Gulf!

5. I would like to add, if you want a child, adopt! It may take time, but would be worth it.

7. Well that's dumb.
That's like removing fire extinguishers on the principle that kids shouldn't be playing with matches in the first place.

11. I think schools should give condoms to anybody who asks for him.
I don't think kids should be having unprotected sex because some church lady got her pearls all in a bunch.

12. Well considering 1st graders aren't capable of sex why would you give them condoms?

14. Because they are capable of sex.
Kids play doctor. Every now and then it escalates into full sexual intercourse. Not that I think it's a high risk group for STDs or pregnancy.

But condoms are a safety measure. Not some evil force of Satan's handiwork that tricks kids into having sex because they have access to them.

16. No, they are not capable of sex. You can't possibly be serious.
You are talking about 6 and 7 year olds here. If you give them condoms they wouldn't even know what to do with them.

19. Same with beer, cigs, and guns, because they will do that stuff anyway
Why be such prudes? I shot guns when I was young, took a puff of grandpa's cigar, and had a few sips of beer.

Gun safety should be mandatory in schools. And why not have beer option at lunch, just lower alcohol content for them.

13. WAIT A MINUTE! 1ST GRADERS ARE GETTING ACTION?
What the hell do they need condoms for? They don't need to know about this unless they find one in daddy's drawer. Even then it should be just a greasy baloon. Schools need to be preoccupied with teaching things kids can use to graduate and keep them competative in the world. Leave the condom talk to Mommy and Daddy. That will help them more than this bullshit.

18. You know why our 6th grade daughter is NOT having sex...
It's because her parents are actively involved in her life.

I know that's a pretty difficult statement to comprehend, and I am sure that I will be berrated for making such a broad generalization on the ability of single-parent families to properly parent their children...

but to that I say: hogwash!
