TRENDING: RNC cancels Breitbart fundraiser
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) – The Republican National Committee has cancelled a fundraiser with conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart, who is under fire for promoting an edited video that falsely portrays former Agriculture Department employee Shirley Sherrod as having boasted about discriminating against a white farmer looking for her assistance.

Breitbart was scheduled to appear with RNC Chairman Michael Steele at a reception later this month in Beverly Hills.

“We are working on scheduling and we fully plan to have another event scheduled soon based on our existing trips to California,” an RNC spokesman said in a statement sent to CNN.

The spokesman said the fundraiser was cancelled “To better capitalize on the fall fundraising season that happens post-Labor Day, while also lowering costs by utilizing existing trips to California.”

5. So, it's the timing, not Breitbart?
We should make sure that the Republicans stay closely tied to Mr. Breitbart. They are so allergic to honesty that they can't even admit that they canceled the event to avoid being linked to Breitbart.

35. That's what struck me too.
republican leaders seem required to lie with each statement they make, even when it's not necessary. I have never seen such a dishonest group of people in my life.

I actually feel kind of sorry for the poor country bumpkins who have been pumped so full of fear and hate of The Other. They simply aren't mentally equipped to distinguish truth from lies and end up swallowing endless gallons of bullshit from fox "news" and right-wing hate radio.

The really sad thing is that many, even most, of these "bumpkins" are extremely friendly and generous, if simple-minded, people. It is only their political views (and their racism) that I find so odious. I really don't think they are truly "evil" in the way that the Cheneys and the Palins and the Becks of the world are evil. If anything, they are witless victims of fear-mongering far-right demagoguery that convinces them that they are helpless victims of The Other. They have been (rather easily) tricked into supporting a corporate-fascist agenda that will bring untold misery to themselves and their families. And to the rest of us too!

I'm almost tired of this question, but is there ANY way that we can reach these people with the truth? Is it time for a "Radio Free America" that can somehow blast through the Iron Curtain of right-wing lies, fear, and hate that surrounds these poor wretches, before it's too late?

10. This is what happens
when your "movement" peaks too soon. Most people can't maintain that level of anger and hatred when they really aren't victims of anything.

The Civil Rights movement lasted and prevailed because there really were serious inequities discrimination. same with the women's movement. But the Tea Party seems to be more about a bunch of people who are pissed about losing an election. Their lives really haven't changed much since the election, despite all the rhetoric. So the anger just fizzles out.

They've got no answers besides their talking points, which really aren't answers. The leaders of their "movement" can't keep this going and turnout seems to show this.

22. They did get a tax cut, didn't they.
That was one of the red flags, IMHO, that this is not a very bright group. Early on, realizing that their whole movement was about "Taxed Enough Already" at a time when they got a tax cut, it was clear that these people are not very bright, or the narrative was written way ahead of time. Okay, clearly it is a combination. Although you would think that if their main issue was taxes, that somebody should have spoken up and said something like, "Shouldn't we pick a different issue, considering that we are getting tax cuts this year?". I suppose it sounds more politically correct than their real motivation of "There is a nigger in the white house!!!!". The sad truth is that most of them do not realize what pawns they are. When I explain to people that they are following a very racist agenda, they just do not get it. For example, they see Breitbart and Fox's work nightly. They see the same two black guys at a voting station being shown over and over again (75 times by fox) and just do not see that the strategy by the Rethugs and Fox is to scare whitey, but you can tell by talking to them that the message is working on them. Hard to fight this type of mentality.

37. +1000.
You've got it!

I too was amazed at the "stop raising our taxes" protests in the wake of a massive tax cut given to the very people protesting their "increased" taxes.

Maybe I am just jaded, but I now expect conservatives to get absolutely everything crazily wrong every single time. It is almost beyond belief how they manage to come down on the wrong side of every issue, every time. And they're not just on the "wrong" side. They invariably go for the "un-American, un-Christian, inhuman" side.

These are Americans? In what sense, Charlie?

42. Americans? Not by my definition.
Isn't it ironic that the ones that are so quick to wave the flag seem to follow actions that are not in the best interest of the country?

One other iron that I have long considered is that this party is so quick to make the Hitler comparison, but if you look at the way the tea party acts, they would absolutely be great nazis. They would be the best nazi's ever! I can make a long case for this, but to sum it up in an example, if Beck was Hitler, do you think that any of these teabaggers would do anything less than put on a uniform and blindly, enthusiastically follow him? And Beck is not the only one.

There are so many issues with the Republican party that I can't even get to a point where I agree or disagree with. Instead, I am simply stunned that people could be so stupid as to even come to these conclusions. WTF is wrong with these people?

its wingnut base, by harnessing anger over election of America's first President who is African American and also America's first President who is a descendant of Muslims. (Pick your favorite hate or feel free to double dip! Yeayyyy! :sarcasm:)

So, Obama's tax cuts are irrelevant to them. So is his apparent complete lack of interest in their firearms. Neither changes his genes and nothing he does or doesn't do ever will.

12. This is actually a radical breakdown for the GOP...
they are distancing themselves after 2 serious gaffes, they have learned reaction. Under "normal" circumstances, they band together, this shows me, among other things, that they have started to realize there are repercussions for they actions. One thing is for sure, they never want to be held accountable for anything, once accountability comes into the equation they scamper away. The R's are just a few millimeters from what I predicted about 6 months ago, the complete meltdown of the GOP...:woohoo:

16. "White anger" is a part of it...
but radicals from either party, generally don't do too well.

Thing of it all is, the GOP has absolutely nothing in their repertoire, it's all about "we will take the nation Backward!" R's are still wondering just what the heck the party is supposed to be about...They have become the Modern "Knownothings", can't win with that...

She energized McCain's campaign, which was dying before he brought her in. If she had been smart and well-informed, as well as radical, she would have continued to help him (but I thing Obama would still have won because of the Bush economy).

24. Yep...so many R's are seen as "disposable" I don't see
how they can claim any unity at all?

I came up through the Eisenhower presidency, and while I was young, I could not help but feel proud, after all, this was a brave new world, thanks the work of people prior to my existence. By most accounts, the Ike years were decent, a lot was done during those years to our infrastructure, many important things were done.

This is not the GOP of years ago, it has become nothing more than a cookie cutter system...and these cookies are all stale and obnoxious. I'm going to enjoy watching this come about...the same party that gave us Lincoln and TR...gave us saps after that. Every election cycle, the GOP has the absolute worst candidates. Reagan...oh Lord; Bush I did some decent things, (nothing I can recall off the top of my head); bush II...simply the the worst president this nation has ever seen.

Anyway, a major political party in meltdown is not a pretty sight. The last radical exchange for D's were the Dixiecrats....virtually all of whom went R.

31. The language is evolving... in a good way: "an edited video that falsely portrays..."
In the first week this happened the media was not so blunt in calling this spade a spade.

Fresno Bee on 7/24: http://www.fresnobee.com/2010/07/24/2017285/essay-for-obama-race-means-repeated.html
"In the edited portion of the video that was first available, Shirley Sherrod seemed to have been endorsing get-even discrimination against whites.

NY Times on 7/24: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/22/us/politics/22sherrod.html?_r=1&scp=9&sq=breibart%20sherrod&st=cse
"A conservative blogger put out a misleading video clip that seemed to show her admitting antipathy toward a white farmer"

ABC on 7/20: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2010/07/former-agriculture-department-office-denies-racism-secretary-vilsack-stands-by-her-firing.html
"since it seems to show a government employee saying she discriminated on the basis of race"
