Blasts hit Israeli resort of Eilat
Source: BBC

Several blasts have hit the southern Israeli resort city of Eilat in a suspected rocket attack, Israeli army radio reports.

There have been no casualties, the reports say.

The army radio said that one rocket was believed to have struck inside neighbouring Jordan and another one had landed in the sea.

3. It seems the rockets may have come from Jordan.
"Israeli security forces believe at least three of the rockets struck the Red Sea, while the other two exploded in open areas near the city. The rockets were apparently launched from Jordan." Ha'Aretz

5. Nevermind. You meant "Sinai."
Edited on Mon Aug-02-10 01:17 AM by Behind the Aegis
I just saw that Ha'Aretz updated the story and now is claiming the the rockets came from the Sinai and hit Eliat (Israel) and Aqaba (Jordan), which, ironcially was where the last ones were fired from in April, I think.

But, it is the Middle East and there are many places I have never heard of and have all kinds of spelling, so I was making sure.

10. I googled it too.
UndertheOcean misspelled it, but since s/he has lived in that part of the world, I thought it possible there might be a "Sinia." I googled it too...nothing really came up so I included "Jordan" to the search and plenty of things came up...lots of typos I guess. :)

18. I believe Israel denied they are involved in at least one of those.
Edited on Mon Aug-02-10 04:42 AM by Kurska
I'm not sure exactly which ones you are refrencing, but there was one air strike that wounded 13 that Israel has stated they did and another as of yet unexplained explosion that wounded 24 that Israel claims they did not cause.

It wouldn't be the first time a chemist's mistake has caused a major explosion in Gaza. I'm tentative to believe that the second explosion was not caused by Israel, because it would not fit the scale of the reprisal they would plan for this sort of thing. Firing rockets at Eilat is a major escalation and would warrant a larger response then a single air strike that Israel doesn't even claim.

15. Who is "they"?
Edited on Mon Aug-02-10 02:09 AM by Chulanowa
From the sound of it, "they" are someone in egypt, and to the best of my knowledge, that would make this something more akin to "starting" than "not stopping"

...Unless of course you subscribe to the philosophy that one Arab is the same as another, which, admittedly is a pretty damn common sentiment on DU.

26. Yes, terrorists are usually not known to have a great respect for international borders.
Obviously it is up to the Egyptians to police their own territory to prevent incidents like this.

28. Islamic Jihad?
There's a blast from the past. Like leg warmers and shoulder pads. Still, it would explain the bad aim; at their age, you know, the eyes ain't what they used to be.

And if it were Hamas, it would have been thirty rockets and they all would have hit the water. And Hamas would have proclaimed it to be a victory already.

No, my guess is that it was some random dumbasses in Egypt who got their hands on a couple of rockets.

34. Are you serious?
Edited on Mon Aug-02-10 10:36 PM by Kurska
This is a shortened list of attacks Islamic Jihad has claimed in the past 7 years.

An October 2003 suicide bomb at a Haifa restaurant killed twenty-two and injured sixty;
An October 2005 bomb at a Hadera market killed five people;
An April 2006 suicide attack in Tel Aviv killed eleven;
A January 2007 suicide attack at an Eliat bakery killed three. Both the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and the PIJ claim joint responsibility.

Beyond those Islamic Jihad has been firing rockets into Israel for years and even claimed at one point to have developed their own rocket. When a random rocket is fired from gaza during one of the "Ceasefires" in all likelihood it came from Islamic Jihad.

Yes Islamic Jihad is still very much active, yes they fire mortars and rockets into Israel, yes it wouldn't be strange at all if they fired these rockets too.
