Japan tanker was damaged in a terror attack, UAE says
Source: BBC News

A Japanese tanker damaged last week in the Strait of Hormuz near Oman was the target of a terrorist attack, the United Arab Emirates state-run news agency has said.

It said remains of home-made explosives had been found on the hull of the M Star, which was damaged on Wednesday while travelling from Qatar to Japan.

Two days ago, an al-Qaeda linked group said it was responsible.

Officials previously said the ship may have been involved in a collision.

1. There's a surpirse - the UAE publicizes the truth.
Originally they were saying it was a rogue wave. I figgered since it was a Japanese tanker, there might be a dehydrated Godzilla egg in the cargo hold that got wet & hatched.

I'm relieved to see that science has determined it was, in fact, what the rest of the word feared yet expected. I await their suggestions on how future attacks might be prevented. Invisibility paint?

5. Incident in Oil Shipping Lane Is Called an Attack
Source: NY Times

WASHINGTON — Investigators in the United Arab Emirates said Friday that a terrorist attack caused the mysterious damage a Japanese oil tanker suffered last week as it passed through the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears of future attacks in the narrow channel that serves as a passageway for shipping crude oil from the Middle East to the rest of the world.

The damage to the tanker — which an Emirati official said was caused by “homemade explosives” aboard a dinghy — was not considered serious, and there was little immediate impact on oil markets on Friday.

But the news instantly fanned worries about shipping security. If confirmed, the attack would be the first of its kind in the volatile strait, which has long been a focal point for tensions with Iran, just across the water from the Arabian Peninsula.

8. I remember the tanker wars of the 80's
I was on a patrol boat when the US was providing escorts. Guess they will start that up again if this keeps up.
