Crabs provide evidence oil tainting Gulf food web

By JOHN FLESHER (AP) – 9 hours ago

BARATARIA, La. — To assess how heavy a blow the BP oil spill has dealt the Gulf of Mexico, researchers are closely watching a staple of the seafood industry and primary indicator of the ecosystem's health: the blue crab.

Weeks ago, before engineers pumped in mud and cement to plug the gusher, scientists began finding specks of oil in crab larvae plucked from waters across the Gulf coast.

The government said last week that three-quarters of the spilled oil has been removed or naturally dissipated from the water. But the crab larvae discovery was an ominous sign that crude had already infiltrated the Gulf's vast food web — and could affect it for years to come.

"It would suggest the oil has reached a position where it can start moving up the food chain instead of just hanging in the water," said Bob Thomas, a biologist at Loyola University in New Orleans. "Something likely will eat those oiled larvae ... and then that animal will be eaten by something bigger and so on."

BP oil is now turning up under the shells of post-larval blue crabs all across the northern Gulf of Mexico. Nearly all the crab larvae collected to date by researchers, from Grand Isle, Louisiana all the way over to Pensacola, Florida, have oil under their shells. Further analysis is showing that the crabs likely also contain BP’s Corexit dispersant.

21. I do not plan to touch any seafood or fish from the Gulf if I can help it.
You won't be able to tell whether the food is safe just by looking at it. That's what I fear.

51. Now don't go sounding like some conspiracy theorist
BP and the government assure us that the oil has disappeared into a parallel dimension through a wrinkle in the time space continuum, certainly that's a plausible enough explanation for us ignorant Amurikans.

However - only time will tell the extent to which contaminants have continued to enter the crabs i this an other examples. Frequent tests are what are needed as opposed to pure supposition as what may happen over time.

He was very concerned about greanlighting the fish from the Gulf so soon. He feared that once people started getting sick from the fish, the industry would be doomed forever.

It will eventually evaporate, once the crabs are caught and their carapaces are removed.

48. go on living
I wonder what the life span of a crab is? How about the other forms of sea life. How many generations of fish will this stuff keep showing up in?

It makes me quite sad to say it, but I don't think that I nor my family will be eating anything from the Gulf for a long while. I guess any fish I get will have to come from the lake.

Still disturbing to me that the only life we saw in the Gulf when we took our little field trip the other day were the hundreds and hundreds of jelly fish. Of course we were only on the beach. I cannot speak to what it is like further out.
