Brazil to record UFO sightings
Brazil is to officially record any UFO sightings in its vast airspace and make the information available to researchers, according to a government decree published this week.

The text calls on military and civilian pilots and air traffic controllers to lodge any experiences with unidentified flying objects with the Aerospace Defense Command in Brasilia along with any material proof by way of photos or video.

That evidence will be catalogued at the air force’s Historic Documentation Center in Rio de Janeiro state, where it will be made available to searchers of extraterrestrial life and other people interested.

The decree was signed by air force chief Juniti Saito.

“Air force command does not have the specialised structure needed to carry out scientific investigations on these aerial phenomena and will only register the events,” the air force said in a statement sent to the newspaper O Dia.

3. wasn't that the sol (mexican beer?) campaign, later stolen by the american beef council

as many know, mexico suffered (or enjoyed) a huge wave of ufo activity in the 1990s, one of the cutest billboards i saw in rural mexico was a sign for i think sol beer -- "why they come" (i no longer remember the spanish but trust me it meant "why they come")

a few years later, in usa, an ad for the american beef council showing a wonderful sizzling steak and a ufo..."why they come"

as for me, i firmly believe if a million people in mexico city saw something (and video taped it w. their own lying video tapes) they saw SOMETHING

i won't say it was space brothers, no one knows, but they sure as shit saw and documented SOMETHING

i do believe in the power of hysteria BUT if hysteria is this powerful it needs to be studied

12. I'd never ridicule anyone for telling the truth on what they saw

but I'll be the first in line to ridicule insane conclusions of what it actually was. I routinely mock the all-too-many "paranormal" shows on cable for saying "It couldn't be anything other than XXXXX!!!"

If you see an unexplained light in the sky, that's what you saw, an unexplained light. I refuse to even consider the "it had to aliens" unless you saw the aliens. And then, my first thoughts are if you are profiting from your story.

BRASILIA – The Brazilian air force has decided to regulate the way its members should proceed in case they see a UFO or hear of one being sighted, the daily Diario Oficial said Tuesday.

Under the regulations published Tuesday, when an unidentified flying object appears or a sighting is reported, officers must register it in the books of the Aviation Command, which in turn must draw up a document to be sent to the National Archive.

In Brazil there are no official records of UFOs, but it is known that during the 1964-1985 military dictatorship, intelligence services investigated supposed sightings.

Last year in the old files of the dictatorship were found accounts of Operation Plato, which between the years 1977-1978 unsuccessfully attempted to determine the truth of several reports of UFOs sighted over the states of Maranhão and Para.

Other more recent accounts, also unconfirmed, say that on Jan. 20, 1996, a flying saucer fell in a rural area near Varguinhas, Minas Gerais, and that its occupants alighted from the spacecraft.

Residents of Varguinhas, which has an extraterrestrial being as a symbol, say that aliens were captured by the army, which took them to a military base and then turned them over to a scientific research institute amid the utmost secrecy.

And while there are no records of landings nor direct contacts with creatures from other worlds, Chapada dos Viadeiros National Park, near Brasilia, is said to be home to an “open door to space” through which flying saucers customarily enter and overfly the region.

In this park believers in UFOs tend to meet, passing the daylight hours asleep and at night watching the skies in hopes of observing some spacecraft from another planet. EFE Source

There is a very famous Brazilian singer/composer named Cayetano Veloso, He was active against the military government in the 1970s.

After being imprisoned for some time, he escaped to exile in London. While there, he wrote the song "London, London." It was a protest against the dictatorship and in it he mentions the flying saucers the military government used to distract attention of Brazilians.

Video worth watching; notice the subtle comparisons of freedom in London with the dictatorship in Brazil. Cayetano is now in his 60s, a huge star in Brazil still.

His images show him to be an unexpectedly handsome guy. Of course all the ones I've heard of have been, both male and female.

Reading about all the singers in Latin America who were imprisoned and tortured by the fascists could be extremely worthwhile.

Victor Jara of Chile was the most extreme case.

There was a Chilean musical group named Inti-Illimani which happened to be on tour in Europe when the 1973 Pinochet coup happened. The leftist group was not allowed to return Chile until 1988, 15 years later. It became the longest musical tour ever known.

There was also the well-known, leftist Chilean group Quilapayún. It was forced into exile in France for more than a decade.

In Uruguay, folk singer Daniel Vigletti was forced into exile.

In Argentina, the same with Mercedes Sosa.

The Argentine junta banned the musical and movie of "Evita." Too Peronista was the reason.

In Chile, the Pinochet dictatorship banned the movie "The Fiddler on the Roof," saying it was "clearly a Marxist film." The Israeli Embassy had to cancel a benefit showing of the film.

In Brazil, Chico Buarque de Holanda was also forced into exile. He once wrote a song titled "A pesar de você" that escaped the military censors until about 100,000 copies had been sold. The title means "In spite of you" and main message is that "in spite of you, tomorrow will be a new day."

Many others shared the same fate, for dictatorships tend to be deathly afraid of words and songs.

There are no philosophical contradictions involved in believing in UFOs. Belief in God, as God is usually conceived, involves a fair bit of contradiction - free will vs determinism, infinite regress, the existence of natural evil, etc.

I was just in a plenary session with the Archivist of the United States. There was a Q & A session and I really wanted to get up and ask him about the possibility of the National Archives releasing anything it has on UFOs. Of course, I don't want to be blacklisted and lose my career either... ;)
