Target back in liberals' cross hairs over political contribution
Edited on Thu Aug-12-10 09:11 AM by qb
Source: StarTribune.com

Members of the Service Employees International Union are taking aim at Target because the union contends it is a company that "seeks the business of immigrant families and then supports anti-immigrant politicians."

Target first came under fire for its contribution to MN Forward, which is running pro-Emmer ads, because of Emmer's long history of opposing gay rights.

12. Unions are frequently not anti-immigrant
Their take is that an immigrant working legally in the U.S., in an official worker visa program where the government can require the employer to meet certain minimum wage, benefit, and safety conditions in order to be allowed to hire the immigrant, is better for workers than undocumented workers slaving away in underground sweatshops beyond the sight of government regulation.

6. They have gone too far too many times.
Remember when they would allow a pharmacist to deny Plan B birth control to customers because of personal objections? Then contributing a huge amount to the candidate who is fiercely anti-gay and of course their anti-immigration stance. Too much from them. They are un-American in so many ways. I've loved shopping there through the years, but not one foot will I put through their doors anymore.

7. Demonstration raises questions about Emmer’s immigration views, Target’s actions
Edited on Thu Aug-12-10 10:10 PM by Omaha Steve
Source: Workday Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS - Led by the Service Employees International Union, members of the labor, faith and religious communities are rallying today against Target Stores’ decision to support Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer and other public officials who support anti-immigrant legislation.

Protesters are demonstrating in front of the Target Store at 900 Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis to ask Target Stores whether they stand with or against immigrant families.

Earlier this summer it was revealed that Target Store executives donated $150,000 in corporate money to the MN Forward PAC, which supports Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer.

Emmer supports Arizona’s anti-immigrant law and legislation such as English-only bills. In 2007, he voted against the Minnesota DREAM Act, which would have allowed students who came to the state as the children of undocumented immigrants and graduated from Minnesota high schools to pay in-state tuition at public colleges and universities.

8. Omaha Steve, change 'races' to 'raises' in the title, but leave
every other damn syllable of this post intact.

Strongly recommended. This story is worth following very closely into the fall.

Bravo.

9. Target is certainly ruing the day
they contributed 150,000 to that Repub front group.
It's become a PR disaster for them all around.

The lovely irony is that Emmer is running for governor against Mark Dayton whose father and uncles created Target.

11. Target is not very smart, are they?
Anti gay, and there are plans in the works to open a store here in San Francisco.

I love seeing corporations burn their own money.
