US Senate passes $600m Mexico border bill
Source: BBC News

The US Senate has reconvened during its August recess to pass a $600m (£385m) Mexico border security measure.

The funds will mostly be directed to activities on the south-west border, such as hiring 1,000 border patrol agents and 250 immigration and customs enforcement agents.

It will also provide for new surveillance technology including unmanned drones.

A White House official said President Obama would sign the bill on Friday.

1. So is this deficit neutral?
Or doesn't it have to be when it's something republicans want?

2. Yes
Foreign work visa's will be more expensive to pay for the bill. Win/Win if you ask me. Better border security, and the cost advantage to hiring foreigners goes down.

5. What about the Canadian border?
Unskilled labor comes across the Mexican border but what about the professional (if that is not a bad word here) that come across the Canadian border.

We need to protect that border too!

6. They didn't reconvene - only two senators were present. Can't interfere with vacation!
from the link:

Republicans and Democrats agreed to pass the bill by a "voice vote", requiring only two senators to be present. Senator Ben Cardin, Democrat of Maryland, presided while Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York, voted in the 40-minute session.

7. Congress approves border security bill
Source: Reuters

Congress on Thursday passed legislation to strengthen security along the border with Mexico, trying to tackle the politically sensitive issue of illegal immigrants ahead of November congressional elections... Congress' speedy approval of the border security funds marked a rare display of bipartisanship in the hot-button immigration debate.

9. Pitiful -- $600 million -- to MILITARIZE immigration ... vs forcing employers to check SS ID --
Edited on Fri Aug-13-10 01:38 AM by defendandprotect
And that can be done INSTANTLY ... as many other nations do it --

In fact, Arizona was set to do it a few years ago, and GOP objected . . .

they insisted no state could do it -- had to come from Federal Government ---!!

OBAMA . . . ARE YOU LISTENING? INSTANT SOCIAL SECURITY CHECK BY EMPLOYERS!!

It's really militarizing the drug war -- as Mexico has done and they now have

28,000 dead in four years!!

We need to simply institute the "E" check for Social Security ID immediately anyone

is being interviewed for any position --

We have to stop protecting the greedy employers who want to use and abuse these immigrants --
