‘India’s aid offer being considered’

Saturday, Aug 14, 2010

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday seemed unsure about how to respond to a $5 million aid offer from India to help it meet its flood crisis.

The offer was made by Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna in a telephonic conversation with his Pakistani counterpart Shah Mehmood Qureshi.

Mr Krishna described the offer as a “gesture of solidarity with the people of Pakistan in their hour of need”, a statement issued by the Indian High Commission here said.

A statement by Foreign Office here on Mr Krishna’s call did not mention the Indian aid offer. However, sources in the foreign ministry indicated that it was being considered. “We have not rejected the offer outright and a decision would be made soon,” a senior official told Dawn.

3. Actually in the de-escalation of conflict
it would be a sound investment.

15. True - this is an amazing offer from India, that Pakistan should accept
in the spirit it was offered. It would be amazing if it were the first step in both countries, but especially Pakistan, which has been a source of terrorism in India, moved to de-escalate their conflict.

This would be extremely significant for them - and for the world. It would make the Afghanistan'/Pakistan problem easier to resolve.

5. Katrina and Iran and Cuba both.
Bush deserves some extra kicks to the face for that.

7. hahahahaha
They are "considering" the aid offer? So many people suffering and Pakistanis (government) are still caressing their egos?

Any other group would have accepted it and said "thank you."

9. May I suggest you look at your own country's officials first?
I can't fathom how you find that funny. Your hatred towards Pakistan has come out on several threads. I'm an Indian and I find it appalling that the Indian government took its own sweet time declaring aid. There has been speculations that the delay was due to Indian government officials being miffed about Pakistan's handling of Indian aid during the 2005 earthquakes.

You have to be pretty small to not help people suffering just because someone stripped the "made in India" labels.

Indian officials have the same Ego that you find so disparaging in Pakistanis.

10. It was not hateful and I have actually sent large donations to
Doctors without Borders' Karachi operation and to the Red Cross.

I just found it ironic that someone would hesitate to accept aid while in dire straits.

14. You are aware the kind of contorsions we had to go
through here in the United States to get the feds to finally cry uncle after oh 8 days during Katrina?

I actually forgive you if you don't. A lot of it was done sub-rosa. I am just glad it worked.

16. This would be a real gesture of goodwill in the region.
$5 million is enormous for India, and would go very far in Pakistan both literally and figuratively. Let's hope the Pakistani government accepts it with grace.
