HYDE PARK — Walk through a giant Social Security card and into an exhibit on the creation of America's largest social program.

"Our Plain Duty: FDR and America's Social Security" opens to the public Sunday at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park.

It is timed to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act, which took place Aug. 14, 1935, said Cynthia Koch, director of the library and museum.

The exhibit begins with a depiction of America during the Great Depression, before government old age or unemployment insurance existed.

1. We take it for granted. We should not. It's extraordinary in our history.
This anniversary should be appreciated. Social Security has made lives better. Period.

Thank you, FDR.

6. If you are
ever up in those parts, i highly recommend. I have been and it was absolutely worth it, of course my pic is of FDR so you can already tell I am an admirer. Anyway, its very educational and intriguing. The museum, the exhibits, and the Roosevelt household, which has an impressive view of the Hudson, all worth it. As well, it is very somber and respectful too. You can visit the President and Eleanor's grave site on the premises in a peaceful, relatively secluded area, full of greenery. Not too far away is the final resting place of Fala, for those 1st dog fans. Before i keep rambling, just know this, if you are an admirer of the late President or just a student of history, its worth it.

4. Social Security does what it was intended to do - provide for

senior citizens and others who are unable to any longer provide for themselves through a system they pay into while still working. Imagine the lives of our parents and grandparents without it. Grim, indeed. Certainly one of the Roosevelt Administration's finest accomplishments.
