Warren sits down with big bank lobbyists

Elizabeth Warren, a top candidate to lead the new Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection, met quietly last week with some of her sharpest critics: big bank lobbyists.

Before the Harvard law professor visited the White House on Thursday to talk with Obama advisers about the consumer bureau job, she spent an hour just down Pennsylvania Avenue at the Financial Services Roundtable, which represents the nation's largest financial firms, said people familiar with the meeting.

Warren and Roundtable President Steve Bartlett spoke at length in his office about the role of the new regulatory agency, which -- despite the group's objections -- was included in the far-reaching financial legislation signed into law by President Obama last month.

Meeting with an industry trade group isn't out of the ordinary for Warren. During her regular trips to Washington in her role as watchdog over the government's $700 billion bailout program over the past year and a half, Warren has sought to build relationships with lawmakers and interest groups who have at time been wary of her fiery rhetoric.

3. I hope this was as innocent as it may seem
And that it wasn't a pre arranged trial run where the fat cats get to report back to the White House and give her a thumbs up or thumbs down.

But my cynicism won't let me fully accept that.

In any event, she deserves credit for wading into the lions den and dealing with these people.

Couple in Duluth SWAT Standoff Speaks (Foreclosure)

DULUTH, Ga. - A couple who lost their home to foreclosure and spent hours locked in a SWAT standoff with police when they refused to leave, talked about the situation Thursday.

The Grabers said they were living their version of the American dream. The Grabers said they owned their home for more than a decade when Howard Graber suffered a massive stroke. The Grabers said that's when everything changed.

On Wednesday, Gwinnett County deputies went to the Graber's Davenport Park Lane home to serve an eviction notice after the bank had foreclosed on the property. It turned into a four hour standoff and SWAT teams were called in.

"I was afraid for my life. I was afraid for my disabled husband's life. There's no way I was going to go to the front door," said Noya Lee Graber.

Police eventually stormed the house. Howard Graber spent the night in jail.

"They said, 'Taser her! Taser her now!' and I got tasered right on my stomach," said Noya Lee Graber.

Irish Nuns Sue Morgan Stanley over Bond Deal

August 12,2010

By Patrick Allen CNBC Senior News Editor

A group of nuns from Ireland are suing Morgan Stanley, alleging improper actions by the investment bank that led them to lose at least 5 million euros ($6.4 million), about 80 percent of their total investment, a filing by Stuarts Law showed.

The claim, titled "The Sisters of Jesus and Mary versus Morgan Stanley", is related to bond investments linked to Dresdner Bank debt.

The filing claims Morgan Stanley’s Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) Saturn's Investment Europe "deliberately or carelessly failed to redeem the notes" following their downgrading in January 2009.

According to the filing, The Sisters of Charity of Jesus and Mary claim the SPV then waited until the price of the bond had risen in June 2009 to redeem the note and securing "Morgan Stanley a profit of at least $11.2 million … by way of a termination of payment."

The nuns are seeking damages of 15 million euros. Morgan Stanley declined to comment on the case.

10. Never missed a mortgage payment --but facing a foreclosure!
So, you think you have your mortgage covered...you make your payments on time, pay your taxes and insurance, and then somehow you get the dreaded foreclosure letter. How can that be?

11. I read your link.
If the taxes were paid twice, why didn't the homeowner just get a refund from the tax office and use that to pay back the amount paid out?
