Obama says economy coming back slowly but surely
Source: Associated Press

COLUMBUS, Ohio – President Barack Obama used the homey backdrop of a middle-class Ohio family's backyard Wednesday to try to show voters he shares their concerns about the economy, health care and Social Security.

Jacket off and sleeves rolled up, Obama took questions from the Weithman family and a small group of their neighbors arrayed around picnic tables and lawn chairs. His message was familiar: The economy needs more work, but it's getting better.

"A lot of it is like recovering from an illness," the president said. "You get a little bit stronger each day."

The event came toward the end of a three-day swing that included glitzy, million-dollar fundraisers. Obama's focus here was more on everyday struggles. He talked privately to Joe and Rhonda Weithman and their two children, 11-year-old Josh and 9-year-old Rachel, around their kitchen table before moving to the backyard and broadening the conversation to include families from the neighborhood.

Several things here:
1. Tarp was Bush's doing.

2. There is no way in hell that it would not have been a tragic mistake to let AIG fail, and that's an understatement.

3. Tarp may have been the only thing that Bush did right. I give him a lot of credit for going against his stupid ideology and for not letting the economy go further into a liquidity trap.

4. Rich people as a whole never get hurt by these things. That's reality. It isn't fair, since they cause these things, but they never get hurt. It's just the way it is.

4. If TARP was carried out like it was explained it was going to be used
, then you might have a point, but giving Tarp money to foreign banks is not a successful use of tax payer dollars.

8. A wide range of choices in there
Why they paid 100 cents on the dollar for assets that were worth at best 20 cents on the dollar is unimaginable. Why they didn't get more out of them in terms of future assets and bonuses is beyond me. And why, in all of that, they could bail out people with mortgages, not to mention find a way to create a jobs program to put some significant portion of the 8 million folks out of work is unfathomable.

12. TARP belongs to us as well
It had to pass the house and senate before it was ever signed by asshole.

3. His analogy of economy/ illness is helpful, but I would like to know
how this jobless recovery can help those who are in need of a job recover from this, illness of poverty, without a job. Last spring it was becoming clear that the economy would be recovering without jobs.

5. Personal anecdote: I got back from vacation and found a postcard in the mail
inviting me to a job fair at the local arena. That was the week after I filled out an app online for ushering position.

Obama's right, certainly.

6. I think this is risky rhetoric
I think he would be better off letting others say things are getting better.

He should just say he hopes things get better, and is working for that outcome.

Saying things *are* getting better sets him up for unnecessary grief whenever there is negative blip.

9. He needs to talk with the people more.
Because for many of us, the economy is still pretty bleak or even getting worse. Many folks have just given up hope because of being tired of asking when nothing is given in return.

My family is lucky: we now have good healthcare and dh is now permanently employed. The downside is his wage is significantly less, our cost of living has sky-rocketed (utilities in particular) and the reality is I need to return to the workforce after being out for many years. Not really even sure where to start. And English degree isn't worth much more than minimum wage these days.

13. The Sure Economy Fix
I Have This Idea How To Fix This Economy For Good. All This Government Have To Do Is Create A Currency Flow To Assist This Current Currency Flow. The Government Created Currency Should Have Two Limitations:

1. This Currency Cannot Be Used For Investments In Wall Street.

2. This Currency Cannot Be Used For Money Exchanges For Outside The United States.

If The Government Decides To Do This, The Bills Should Use LIVE Presidents On Their Created Bills Maybe Use The Current President On The Government Version Of The 100 Dollar Bill For Example. Fundraisers And Slow Progress Does Not Seem To Work. I See Too Many Homeless Unemployed People Every Time I Walk On The Street And Ride The Bus. Unemployed People Taking Their Angry Aggressions On Their Employers By Shooting Them And/Or Killing Other Family Members Like The Two Latest Incidents: 1. A Fired Worker From Conn. Shot And Killed 8 People And Injured 2 Others. 2. An Unemployed Mother Killed Her Two Kids Before Letting The Car Rolled Into The River With The Kids In The Car.

And The Unemployment Rate Is Said To Be 9.9%. But Actually, It Seems It Is At About 40 To 50%.
The Republicans Are Basically Are Tired Of Too Many Taxes. Especially If It Is For Welfare, Social Security, Retirement, Union Workers, Health Care,Etc.

That Is Why We Need A Second Currency Flow To Cover Those Topics I Have Stated.

Additionally, The State Of California Have Installed Furloughs For State Employees. They Have To Take Off The 2nd, 3rd, And 4th Fridays Out Of Every Month Because They Think That It Would Fix This Economy. Hey! The Next Thing You Know If Those Furloughs Are Not Enough,Why Not Shut Down The Whole State Just To Save That Money?! If This Country Had 2 Currency Flows, We Wouldn't Be In This Situation. There Are A Lot Of Other Reasons, But I Would Comment Here As The Appropriate Information Comes. :patriot:

And that runs completely counterproductive to this Ultimate game of 12th-Dimensional Pretend that is being played.

Now, just go and read your copy of "The Secret", Clip those Coupons, and get concerned about the real issues in life, like whether Brett Favre will start the first game of the season against the Saints, or if Rachel Zoe will make it though Fashion Week without a Meltdown.

Stop all this boat-rocking. It only helps the GOP Opportunists.

19. At ease, Citizen. It's not your fault. It's all that hippie Free-Thinking Nonsense Programming.
You've been subjected to it all your life.

You just need a chance to embrace Change.

All you really need to learn are the three rules to success in life.

Party Line, Political Theatrics, and Pyrrhic Victory.

Once you embrace the three P's, you'll forget all about that nasty individualism, and take your place among the collective, a better, saner person.

I believe in you.

Just take a deep breath, and numb out.

Resistance.....Is Fatal.

B/c the way they keep raising costs, they must be under the impression that my pay check is getting larger, not smaller.

Still, I think Obama is right. I do believe that things will improve, the question is how soon it will be...
