Sen. Feingold speaks out in support of mosque near Ground Zero

RACINE - When asked about the proposed mosque near Ground Zero, Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis. said he supports religious freedom and if you want to put up a house of worship you should be able to.

"I do not decide for Muslims where they want to buy property and have a religious facility any more than I do for Christians or anybody else. That clearly is not my role," he said when asked his opinion at a Journal Times Editorial Board meeting Tuesday.

He continued: "If the zoning laws and everything else are OK, and you have a piece of private property and you want to put up a house of worship in my country, this country, you should be able to do it."

..................

The National Republican Senatorial Committee on Monday criticized Feingold for not voicing his opinion. But Feingold said the issue is an "intentional distraction for political purposes."

1. Sounds like Obamas first words. He also leaves out commenting on the wisdom of doing so.
"none of my business" isn't supporting it or opposing it. It's abstaining.

3. Actually, it is none of his business
That's the point. It's been decided, people need to live with it (and ratchet down the hatred)/

4. There's no funding. It needs $100 million so it will be people business or it doesn't get built.

2. "I do not decide..." Full Stop. Exactly.
The presumption that it takes to think otherwise...just staggering.

8. As a Wisconsin resident of 50 years I don't believe for a second that he will lose reelection.
I know Republicans who vote for Feingold in the same way they voted for Proxmire years ago. They know they can trust him and that he is an honest man.
