Egg Recall Is Expanded Again (Friday - August 20)
Source: New Yorik Times

A second egg producer in Iowa, Hillandale Farms of Iowa, issued a recall Friday of eggs that it sent to 14 states.

The company said “laboratory-confirmed illnesses” had been associated with the eggs, and federal officials said the illnesses were part of a large outbreak of salmonella that has sickened hundreds across the country since May.

Hillandale Farms of Iowa said it was recalling eggs from its two plants in Iowa, distributed under the brand names Hillandale Farms, Sunny Farms and Sunny Meadow. Eggs produced by Hillandale outside of Iowa were unaffected by the recall.

The company said the recalled eggs were sold in Arkansas, California, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin. The eggs “have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella,” the company said in its statement.

Hillandale’s announcement did not say how many eggs were involved. But Cal-Maine Foods, an egg producer and distributor, said that it had received about 9.6 million of the recalled eggs.

2. Stephen Colbert said.
"I'd hate to be the guy who has to put all the eggs back in that chicken".

7. Most thoroughly cooked.
A raw egg added to most other foods is cooked at temps high enough and long enough to kill the bacteria. Things like homemade Caesar dressing and such - not so much.

From the CDC (if it helps you):

What are the specific actions I can take to reduce my risk of a Salmonella Enteritidis infection?

1. Keep eggs refrigerated at ≤ 45° F (≤7° C) at all times.
2. Discard cracked or dirty eggs.
3. Wash hands, cooking utensils, and food preparation surfaces with soap and water after contact with raw eggs.
4. Eggs should be cooked until both the white and the yolk are firm and eaten promptly after cooking.
5. Do not keep eggs warm or at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
6. Refrigerate unused or leftover egg-containing foods promptly.
7. Avoid eating raw eggs.
8. Avoid restaurant dishes made with raw or undercooked, unpasteurized eggs. Restaurants should use pasteurized eggs in any recipe (such as Hollandaise sauce or Caesar salad dressing) that calls for raw eggs.
9. Consumption of raw or undercooked eggs should be avoided, especially by young children, elderly persons, and persons with weakened immune systems or debilitating illness.

13. This would be a
botulism danger, not so much a salmonella danger.

14. Unless you make your own mayo, it is cooked.
Commercial mayo uses pasteurized eggs products.

All of those foods should be kept chilled, but I think you know that. I'm not going to get into an argument with you about it. If you want to avoid all food that might harbor salmonella bacteria that is entirely your business.

15. I'm a VEGAN, so yes, I do . . . .
have a weakness for cole slaw salad tho!!

So you're saying that if you buy a salad dressing that contains any dairy

product in it -- it's cooked -

Thanks!

8. I checked the list and eggs that I bought just yesterday were on the list.
I threw them out just to be safe. Fortunately, I hadn't eaten any of them yet. I guess it's no egg salad for lunch today.

9. You could have brought them back for a refund
I know, it's a bother for $2.99-$4.00, but still.
