Karzai urges U.S. taxpayers: end security contractors
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Afghan President Hamid Karzai urged U.S. taxpayers on Sunday to stop paying for outside security contractors in Afghanistan that he said were in contact with "Mafia-like groups" and possibly with insurgents.

Karzai, who last week decreed that foreign security contractors must disband in the next four months, said on ABC's "This Week" program that these workers are obstructing the development of Afghan police and security forces.

"I am appealing to the U.S. taxpayer not to allow their hard-earned money to be wasted on groups that are not only providing lots of inconveniences to the Afghan people but actually are, God knows, in contact with Mafia-like groups and perhaps also funding militants and insurgents and terrorists through those funds," Karzai said.

Karzai said the relatively high pay that foreign security firms offer is keeping Afghan people from joining the country's police and security forces.

6. He told Amy Goodman that they needed to be drawn down
at the same rate as our troops or else we'd need to replace them with more troops. That was at the Dem convention, iirc.

3. Sadly, "U.S. Taxpayers" have no control over what the corrupt US politicians pays for.
We should be able to elect uncorrupted people into office and, thus, trust them to make the right decisions about where our taxes go. But, with de-facto bribery ("campaign contributions") being the bedrock of elections, it will never be. Instead, government contractors who freely shovel the treasury into their pockets dutifully launder a portion back to their "on the pad" politician to insure the corruption is institutionalized.

5. If half of what one hears about the Karzai
regime is true, and if our mercenaries are too crooked for him to stomach or just too much competition for him to handle, then we have a problem.

8. You hit it on the head with the competition thing
Foreign security contractors are probably a massive interference in his turning military assets into Swiss bank account assets.

This is a pot-kettle sort of thing.
