Source: Al Jazeera English

At least 26 people have been killed in a blast at a mosque inside a religious school in Pakistan's South Waziristan tribal region.

Intelligence officials said a prominent religious leader appeared to have been the target of the explosion in the town of Wana, near the Afghan border, on Monday. "Apparently it was a suicide attack and Maulana Noor Mohammad was the target," the Reuters news agency cited an intelligence official in Wana as saying.

Noor Mohammad, a former parliamentarian who was running the school, was greeting worshippers after prayers at the mosque when the bomber struck.

Locals described the cleric as an influential figure who had several times acted as a negotiator between the Taliban and the Pakistani government.

2. After finding out Fox news is helping fund the mosque
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 11:44 AM by superconnected
I can't help but think there is something wrong with them. But that's here. And having a news company that also supports torture and war be a major funder only makes them suspect.

For Afghanistan you have to look at this bombing incident and wonder because at what point to people get so mad at each other that they essential blow up a church?

3. Pretty much...
...since the death of the Prophet Muhammad in 632.

Sunni and Shite have been killing each other since then in manners that would make the Klan blush.

5. The target was a negotiator between the Taliban and the Pakistani government
Edited on Tue Aug-24-10 07:07 AM by Turborama
According to the AJ English article. I can't find out much more about him but a Pakistani newspaper has http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2010\08\24\story_24-8-2010_pg1_1">stated: "Pro-government cleric Maulana Noor Muhammad was delivering a sermon in the area’s biggest mosque when the attack occurred".

Pro-government negotiator assassination for as yet unknown reasons, apart from maybe just the fact he was pro-government.

Maybe he was a Sufi? Fareed Zakaria did a good piece about Al Qaeda's hatred for them leading them to carry out a massive suicide attack on a mosque in Pakistan, here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x497869

As for you Faux comment, I'm thinking along the same lines. In this reply to another thread, I've posted what I'm finding out so far and will probably be making a standalone OP about it and raising questions soon: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=4514591&mesg_id=4515499

4. Update: Anti-Taliban leader killed
Another blast on the outskirts of Peshawar, the capital of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, killed Israr Khan, the leader of an anti-Taliban militia.

Khan and two aides were passing through a market in the village of Matni when the bomb, planted in a cart, exploded.

Three children were also wounded, according to police officer Khursheed Khan.
