BERLIN -- A German security official said Thursday that the United States had sent two captives from the U.S. military prison camps at Guantánamo Bay for resettlement in Germany.

Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said the men were in the care of state authorities in Rhineland-Palatinate and Hamburg, where they would get help adapting to life in Germany.

The Deutsche Press Agency reported from Hamburg that one of the men was a 34-year-old stateless Palestinian named Ayman who was sent to the U.S. prison camps soon after it opened in January 2002. He was being checked out in a local hospital. The man, being resettled in the Rhineland-Paltinate in western Germany, is reportedly Syrian.

De Maiziere noted that Germany took in another former inmate from Guantánamo in 2006 -- German-born Turkish citizen Murat Kurnaz, now 28, who had grown up in Germany.
