Chrissy the Pooh and Bozo the Clown: The 'Brady Bunch' upbringing of a Tea Party maverick
Source: MSNBC/NYT

WILMINGTON — Before she was a Tea Party cause célèbre, liberal laughingstock and perhaps the embodiment of a can-you-top-this-for-bizarre political season, Christine O’Donnell grew up in a “Brady Bunch” household of six kids (three Democrats, three Republicans), two parents (one of each) and an appreciation for the dramatic, the eccentric and the media spotlight.

“We were a big noisy family with a lot of backyard skits and carnivals,” said Ms. O’Donnell, whose mother, Carole, called her Chrissy the Pooh and whose father, Daniel, worked a series of small television roles before scoring his signature gig — playing Bozo the Clown.

Ms. O’Donnell was joined Thursday by her oldest sister, Jennie, a lesbian who seems unbothered by Christine’s past statements about homosexuals (they have an “identity disorder,” she said in 2006) and has moved temporarily from Los Angeles to help on the campaign.

She met Vice President Dan Quayle and engaged in late-night debates with fellow volunteers crashed out on the floor of a cheap hotel. “What I discovered while talking to my fellow College Republicans,” Ms. O’Donnell said, “is that I have opinions.”

“She is a dabbler,” said Mr. Maher, on whose show “Politically Incorrect” Ms. O’Donnell said that she “dabbled in witchcraft” in 1999. “Everyone focused on the witchcraft part of that statement, but I keep thinking of the dabbling.”

1. OK now folks I love the reason she finally choose to be a Christian
because of Italian Meatballs. Yep that's right, MEATBALLS. She said she tried other religions and just made her mind up because by being a Christian she could eat meatballs. The rest of the religions were mostly vegans. The more we hear -- the more we don't want to hear.

2. She said in another interview that she had dabbled in every other kind of religion.
So who has the identity disorder, Christine?

4. I never knew there were multiple Bozo the clowns

I grew up outside Chicago and assumed that the show was shown everywhere. He was not even one of the ones that made the Wikipedia article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bozo_the_Clown#Local_TV_Bozos

This article is so weird - and calling her family a Brady Bunch family is really a strange comparison - as the only similarity is that there were 6 kids.

These paragraphs are more telling:

Her personal story has formed a backdrop of a camera-ready career — even though she has largely cloistered herself since her primary victory last month to avoid the media carnival that has arisen over her success as well as her apparent résumé exaggerations, past legal woes and old video clips showing her holding forth on issues such as chastity (good), masturbation (bad) and witchcraft (a teenage dalliance).
<snip>
It is not clear, however, when or where she has been meeting the people of Delaware, at least since the primary. She has canceled a series of public events and television interviews and has barely been seen in public, though she re-emerged Friday at an opening for her campaign headquarters in Wilmington.

Her personal story is a mess - not the backdrop of a "camera-ready career". "Cloistered" is a very interesting word to use here - rather than hiding from the media. The second chosen excerpt suggests that she is really not running a campaign - as much as it is running itself.

The chutzpah of speaking of 'having been through hardships and emerging stronger" is incredible. Where were the hardships? She went to pricey college, that is not ever listed as highly competitive in one of counties often listed as the 10 wealthiest in the country. (Her hometown is very affluent - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moorestown_Township,_New_Jersey ) It is only through her weird choices that she ever had any economic problems - and her solution was to live off contributions. Think of the people who can say they went though hardship, most don't - and when they do, there was something major - like a child dying. She apparently had a supportive family and has not suffered bad health or lose of anyone close.

5. She is letting all the free publicity work for her
I had to go find a picture of Coons because he not-so-mysteriously only talked about barely mentioned but never shown

She has no hardship to speak of as you point out. Slightly upper middle class where everyone goes to college and then its all ballet/soccer games/ and high tech baby strollers. Trust me I know- THAT is MY life.
