MSNBC/NYTWILMINGTON — Before she was a Tea Party cause célèbre, liberal laughingstock and perhaps the embodiment of a can-you-top-this-for-bizarre political season, Christine O’Donnell grew up in a “Brady Bunch” household of six kids (three Democrats, three Republicans), two parents (one of each) and an appreciation for the dramatic, the eccentric and the media spotlight.
“We were a big noisy family with a lot of backyard skits and carnivals,” said Ms. O’Donnell, whose mother, Carole, called her Chrissy the Pooh and whose father, Daniel, worked a series of small television roles before scoring his signature gig — playing Bozo the Clown.
Ms. O’Donnell was
joined Thursday by her oldest sister, Jennie, a lesbian who seems unbothered by Christine’s past statements about homosexuals (they have an “identity disorder,” she said in 2006) and has moved temporarily from Los Angeles to help on the campaign.
She met Vice President Dan Quayle and engaged in late-night debates with fellow volunteers crashed out on the floor of a cheap hotel. “What I discovered while talking to my fellow College Republicans,” Ms. O’Donnell said, “is that I have opinions.”

“She is a dabbler,” said Mr. Maher, on whose show “Politically Incorrect” Ms. O’Donnell said that she “dabbled in witchcraft” in 1999. “Everyone focused on the witchcraft part of that statement, but I keep thinking of the dabbling.”
