UK changes travel advice for (Britons going to)France & Germany, says threat of terrorism now 'high'

LONDON — Britain's Foreign Office has upgraded its travel advice for France and Germany, warning Britons going to those countries that the threat of terrorism there is high.

Before Sunday's change, the government's travel advice for France and Germany was that the threat from terror attacks there was "general."

The update came shortly after the U.S. State Department issued a travel alert warning Americans of potential terrorist threats in Europe and urged them to be vigilant in public places.

Britain's Home Secretary Theresa May said that the threat of terrorism in the U.K. remains unchanged at "severe," meaning an attack is highly likely.

Britain upgrades European travel advice due to rise in terror threat

Haroon Siddique

Britain has followed the United States in upgrading its travel advice for Europe and warning of a heightened risk of terrorist attacks.

The foreign office said there was "a high threat of terrorism" in Germany and France, having previously identified a "general threat".

The new advice comes after British security and intelligence sources said last week that a plot to launch "commando-style" attacks on Britain, France, and Germany had been intercepted and foiled by drone attacks on militants based in Pakistan.

The foreign office is warning that "attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers".

2. That is what I think.....
The governments will do anything to keep labor peace...including scaring the hell out of everyone. I think it is bogus.

3. Found an article about Sweden that seems to have more info
Sweden raises terror threat alert
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101001/ap_on_re_eu/eu_sweden_terror_alert_3

STOCKHOLM — Sweden has raised the country's terror threat alert to its highest level ever because of an increased threat of terror attacks, security officials said Friday.
The announcement comes the same week that security officials said a terror plot to wage Mumbai-style shooting sprees or other attacks in Britain, France and Germany was still active. Both European and U.S. officials said the plot was still in its early stages and not considered serious enough to raise the terror threat levels.
A Pakistani intelligence official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the media, said eight Germans and two British brothers were at the heart of the al-Qaida-linked terror plot against European cities and had been calling acquaintances in Europe to plan logistics.
~~~
On Friday, a U.S.-released study by counterterrorism experts said the U.S. and its European allies must work together better to stop radicalized Westerners who travel to terrorist training camps and return home to wage attacks.
This article is from Friday. Looks tied to the release of the report, though the article refers to monitoring by Sweden as a reason.
