Two held as man is badly beaten in restroom at bar that launched gay-rights movement
Source: NY Daily News

The West Village bar where the gay-rights movement was launched became the scene of a weekend gay bashing that left a customer beaten in the restroom, cops said.

Police arrested Matthew Francis, 21, and Christopher Orlando, 17, both of Staten Island, on charges they yelled gay slurs and pummeled a man during a robbery at the Stonewall Inn early Sunday.

The ugly incident was one of two separate homophobic hate crimes over the weekend in the most gay-friendly neighborhoods of Manhattan, cops said.

In the other one, Andrew Jackson, 20, was busted on charges that he and a pack of unidentified pals brutally attacked three gay men in Chelsea, at W. 25th St. and Ninth Ave., when they saw them kissing on the corner Friday night.

10. Yes, I am pretty sure it's on Christopher Street - it is pretty much
the heart of the gay West Village section, although a lot of them have moved up to Chelsea.

9. Staten Island has also been the site of a rash of Latino bashings
and beatings as well. They are the most right-wing borough of New York and have often wanted to secede from the City of New York due to their politics. What a hateful bunch of assholes!

13. Well, ONLY the first part of this may be true . . .
"Real New Yorkers know that Staten Island is the dead weight of the city, more akin to New Jersey than to the Empire State."

But "akin to New Jersey"? Only with respect to Jersey stereotypes who aren't even from NJ, i.e., Snooki & friends. :puke:

14. As I understand it
The Latino bashing in Staten Island has been largely at the hands of African Americans, and seems to have very little to do with "right wing" stuff. Rather, it's a classic intra-class conflict relating to jobs in the area. We're talking Port Richmond here.

24. Yes, but that's just the starting point.
It's spreading.

The Black community is very small and surrounded by white community. So is the Hispanic community. Staten Island is just so majority White. So the White community is here in the middle of it watching the violence, and absorbing the violence, and more than willing to spread it further.

Violence doesn't stop at borders. It crosses those borders and spreads like a disease.

23. I live on Staten Island, and yes, you are right.
Things have been getting very hostile out here between the Black and Latino communities recently, and the white communities seems to be piggy-backing off of it to cheer the violence. :(

The more economic stress people are under, the more people act out and react violently, hostilely. Nobody benefits and nobody wins when everyone decides that it's time to hate other people just because times are tough.

16. Antigay Attacks Reported at Stonewall and in Chelsea
Source: The New York Times

They are among the bastions of gay pride and culture in New York City: the Stonewall Inn, the Greenwich Village bar where riots against a police raid in 1969 sparked the city’s gay rights movement, and Chelsea, the Manhattan neighborhood.

But in separate episodes over the weekend, the safety and welcoming atmosphere of those places were tainted by violence and hatred, the authorities said.

Two men attacked a man in the bathroom of the Stonewall Inn early Sunday morning after he told them it was a gay bar, prosecutors said. Just over a day earlier, a group of men were attacked and had homosexual slurs shouted at them on a Chelsea street corner on Friday night, Manhattan prosecutors said.

In the Stonewall case, Matthew Francis, 21, and Christopher Orlando, 17, both of Staten Island, were arrested. Mr. Francis was charged with assault and attempted robbery as a hate crime at his arraignment on Monday in Manhattan Criminal Court. One man, Andrew Jackson, 20, has been arrested so far in the Chelsea attack; he was charged with multiple counts of assault as a hate crime.

21. We do,
it's called Venus. Same gravity as earth, but does have a few minor problems. It rotates very slowly, so the year is longer than the day, the atmosphere is carbon dioxide and sulfuric acid, the pressure at the surface is 80 or 90 times Earth's surface pressure, and the temperature is around 850 degrees. But, there are no gay people there, so the homophobes should be happy. And I would be happy if they all went there.

22. Lots of bars don't card at the door
Stonewall doesn't. It's entirely possible that he went in and just didn't order a drink.
