Colombia metes out sanctions in spy scandal
By The Associated Press,

Monday, October 4, 2010 at 12:53 p.m.

BOGOTA, Colombia — Colombia's inspector general has barred ex-President Alvaro Uribe's chief of staff from public service for 18 years for his role in a domestic spying scandal.

Bernardo Moreno is among nine former senior officials - including three ex-chiefs of Colombia's DAS domestic spying agency - sanctioned Monday by Inspector General Alejandro Ordonez.

Several, though not Moreno, are currently imprisoned on criminal conspiracy charges.

Ordonez barred two former DAS chiefs - Jorge Noguera and Maria del Pilar Hurtado - from public service for 20 years and 18 years, respectively.

Noguera is jailed pending trial, accused among other crimes of providing far-right death squads with the names of union organizers, some of whom were killed.
