Salvadoran President Funes makes groundbreaking trip to Cuba
Oct 5, 2010, 13:23 GMT

Havana - Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes on Monday became the first head of state from his country in half a century to visit Cuba, meeting with Cuban President Raul Castro.

At the start of a three-day visit, Funes said that he wanted to repair a 'historic error.' He said that his predecessors had acted on ideology rather than the good of the Salvadoran people since following the rest of Latin America in breaking off relations with communist Cuba starting in 1961.

'It makes no sense to suspend diplomatic relations for 50 years,' Funes said.

A former journalist and presidential nominee of the left-wing FMLN, Funes was elected in March 2009 and on June 1, 2009 - his first day in office - re-established ties with Cuba.

4. You're the first one ever to attempt to attack Mauricio Funes! "Far out!"
Really groundbreaking moment you've created here.

Do you have any material to share with DU'ers which might serve to help others come to that same impressive assessment of the President of El Salvador?

It would be appropriate if you showed members how you have arrived in believing Mauricio Funes wants to be like Venezuela's President, as it would be profoundly stupid to believe it without any respectable reason.

They do share the experience of being elected by sober, sane, large majorities in their OWN COUNTRIES.

5. We do have the priviledge of being in the same party of the first former President to visit
since the Revolution, Jimmy Carter, May 12th to May 17th, 2002, responding to an invitation extended to him by Fidel Castro when they attended the funeral of their mutual good friend, Pierre Trudeau, in Montreal.
sc

He gave a speech to the Cuban people in a live transmission on radio and tv all over the country. What an amazing event that trip really was and our corporate media barely noted it, if at all, and Bush henchman, John Bolton, tried to screw it up by giving a speech at the Heritage Foundation the night before Carter left, telling them that Cuba was hard at work creating dual-use biological medical experiments (chemical warfare) in their state laboratories.

What a colossal ass. He was wrong, OF COURSE, and Carter was given the invitation by Cuba to return to Cuba at his own discretion, bringing any number of experts with him to go through their laboratories, no time limit.
