Gallup Finds U.S. Unemployment at 10.1% in September
Source: Gallup

Unemployment, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, increased to 10.1% in September -- up sharply from 9.3% in August and 8.9% in July. Much of this increase came during the second half of the month -- the unemployment rate was 9.4% in mid-September -- and therefore is unlikely to be picked up in the government's unemployment report on Friday.

Certain groups continue to fare worse than the national average. For example, 15.8% of Americans aged 18 to 29 and 13.9% of those with no college education were unemployed in September.

The increase in the unemployment rate component of Gallup's underemployment measure is partially offset by fewer part-time workers, 8.7%, now wanting full-time work, down from 9.3% in August and 9.5% at the end of July.

As a result, underemployment shows a more modest increase to 18.8% in September from 18.6% in August, though it is up from 18.4% in July. Underemployment peaked at 20.4% in April and has yet to fall below 18.3% this year.

As claimed in the article, tomorrow's "official" rate is not likely to be as bad. Continue to live in dreamland at your own risk.

1. Where is this dreamland and who exactly is living there?
By the way, the unemployment rate will probably tick up a smidgen or two tomorrow, which is actually not bad news. We know it will go up (as more people start looking for jobs) before it goes down.

4. Dreamland is where people think, despite all evidence,
that things are getting better.

10. The unemployment numbers show things are getting better

A slight increase is an improvement when you consider the number of new Americans entering the work force every month (something like 250,000 a month).

3. Lies, Damned Lies, & Statistics
Take your pick.

I stopped trusting government numbers 20+ years ago when they were obviously lying about the real rates of inflation, and nothing has changed about their numbers in all those years, so that 10.1% is possible (if not too low).

9. Without seasonal adjustments millions of workers are ignored

How can that be considered accurate?

16. I just hired someone...
I don't own a business, but, for the first time, I made a decision regarding hiring someone and informed them they got the position, for what salary they asked for. It was saddening interviewing people, when I would feel the palpable frustration that many of them had. Some actually mentioned the size of their families. Though I've been unemployed before, it was not under such pressure - I cannot imagine.
