KUNDUZ, Afghanistan (Reuters) – A bomb attack inside a mosque killed the governor of Afghanistan's northern Kunduz province and 15 others as they attended Friday prayers, the local police chief said.

The attack on governor Mohammed Omar happened in neighboring Takhar province, where he had a home. At least 20 people were wounded.

"The situation is chaos, we do not know whether it was a suicide attack or whether the bomb was already planted in the mosque," Shah Jahan Noori, police chief for Takhar province, told Reuters.

It was the most serious attack since parliamentary elections last month, when a wave of assaults killed at least 17 people as the Taliban vowed to disrupt polling.

2. Another sign of how ewell it's all going?
Isn't this where U.S military spokespeople come in and claim that this shows how well the war is going, what with the Taliban now being reduced to blowing up mosques, instead of bravely coming to meet their fate in open formation where we can incinerate them in a nanosecond?

4. Of course not
Not sure how you inferred that from my comment.

I think Afghanistan will remain one of the poorest, most backward nations on earth long into the future, with or without foreign troops occupying the place.

And once the occupiers leave, the drug lords, tribal chieftains, and religious medievilists who have run the place for the past 200 years will continue to run the place.

There is nothing to be gained by continuing this war. Obama's "surge" was a foolish mistake that will accomplish nothing.

6. On that we agree
Except for one thing - I'm very uncomfortable leaving the women and girls in that country to the mercy of the taliban and the warlords. I have no idea what the answer to that is but it makes me want to weep when I think what's in store for them.

7. The U.S. never had a problem with it before ...
Let's not pretend like that's the reason we're there, to save muslims from themselves or whatever garbage is spewed throughout mainstream media.

8. Agree
Let's also not pretend that it's the US's presence there to blame for the revolting way women are treated in that country.
