Half of Colombian men admit to abusing partner
Tuesday, 12 October 2010 07:31 Christina Filipovic

Half of Colombian men admit to abusing their female partners, while 26% say they have tried to intimidate them in the past, according to a recent U.N. study.

The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) collaborated to interview 1,080 Colombians in ten cities around the country between October 2009 and April 2010.

Flor Maria Diaz, the general coordinator of the study, stated in an interview with Semana, that the numbers reveal a "very bleak" reality in Colombia.

Of those surveyed, 52% were women, and 48% admitted to being victims of gender-based violence. The study said that 9% of men admit to having punched their partners, and 14% have slapped them.

1. What can you expect from the same people who elected killer-enablers in to their government?
Obviously, not all Colombians are like this, but this machismo brutal violence and "might makes right" mindset has a very strong grip on Colombia.

Welcome to D.U., zoechen. :hi:

On edit, I did see something about the Caribbean region, a minute ago:
Caribbean region joins UN campaign to end violence against women

11 October 2010 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today encouraged everyone in the Caribbean to get involved in the quest to end violence against women – a scourge which affects one in every three women in the region during her lifetime.

~snip~
“No country is immune from gender-based violence, which is abhorrent in its own right, and can prevent girls from getting an education and women from earning a living,” he stated.

“Sadly, it is clear that women in the Caribbean region suffer high levels of such violence,” he added. “According to recent statistics, one in every three women will experience violence in a personal relationship in her lifetime. Prosecutions and convictions remain very low.”

6. You really hate Colombia, don't you?
This is hardly a Colombia-specific problem, domestic abuse happens all over Latin America.
