D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee will announce Wednesday that she is resigning at the end of this month, bringing an abrupt end to a tenure that drew national acclaim but that also became a central issue in the recent mayoral primary race.

2. to be replaced by . . .
someone you will probably dislike even more.

Rhee pushed traditional public schools over charter public schools.

Gray is a huge proponent for charters.

Here's an article speculating on Rhee's replacement: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/class-struggle/2010/10/good-bye_rhee_hello_brave_new.html

6. NY TIMES article from May
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/23/magazine/23Race-t.html

This stuck me

Next to Mulgrew (head of the AFT) was his press aide, Richard Riley. “Suppose you decide that Riley is lazy or incompetent,” I asked Mulgrew. “Should you be able to fire him?”

“He’s not a teacher,” Mulgrew responded. “And I need to be able to pick my own person for a job like that.” Then he grinned, adding: “I know where you’re going, but you don’t understand. Teachers are just different.”

I am all for better pay and pensions but he said that teachers should not be able to be fired i do not get it

9. What's wrong with firing "underperforming" teachers?
When the criteria for "performing" is creating a class full of drones who can pass standardized tests...

Who have been "socialized" to be good little cogs in the corporate wheels...

Who "behave" and don't "question authority"...

Whose natural critical thinking skills and curiosity have been blunted by rote classroom crap...

in order to make sure the test scores are better this year than last...

Whose value is determined by the needs of administrators not the kids...

Who can be fired for being "outrageous" or "too out of the mainstream" or creative in their approach or who teach "unpopular" ideas or challenge their students to think...

Who's determining who gets "fired" for what?

There's a REASON there's teacher tenure.

Anyway, it's a BIG LIE that teachers "can't be fired". If the administrators carry out due diligence and follow reasonable negotiated procedures, and they involve the union in good faith negotiations, OF COURSE a "bad teacher" can be fired!

He was done. He had no more energy to give. He was out by x-mas. So you assholes out there pushing the Mepublican meme that teachers can't get fired because of those awful unions need to get a ticket on the clue bus. I saw it happen.

On edit: I also saw a perfectly competent teacher get ousted by an administrator with bi-polar issues. So there is that, too.

better teaching purposes.
How original!!!!

At some point the city needs to pick an educational theory, a governance model, and a head administrator, and stick with them.

15. About Fricking Time ...............
She's a stain on the idea of better schools.

You want better schools? Just do the opposite of what she did.

Open more schools.
Make class sizes much smaller.
Teach children independent thought instead of training them like animals to fill in a bubble on a piece of paper.

28. I know
It always amazes me that people question whether teachers care about students. Isn't that the point? We care about what happens in education because we care about our kids. It's implicit. Does a minister who doesn't mention God every 2 minutes not believe in God?
