GOP tries to seize opportunity with Stupak gone

CHEBOYGAN, Mich. — Tea party activists rejoiced when Rep. Bart Stupak decided against seeking re-election after helping rescue President Barack Obama's health care plan. Now one of their own hopes to exact the ultimate revenge by winning Stupak's seat.

Michigan vast 1st District, which reaches across 600 miles of woodsy northlands, is usually an afterthought on the national political scene. But with the seat open for the first time in 18 years and control of the House at stake, Democrats and Republicans — and outside interest groups — are pouring in money and flooding the airwaves.

About $1.5 million had been spent on television ads through Oct. 5, the nonpartisan Michigan Campaign Finance Network said.

"It's one of the 15 priority races for us and in the top five," said Tom Tripp of the American Conservative Union.

1. Oh yeah the republicans and CNN are positive they are going
to have the majority in the House and Senate. They are handing out chairman ships already. And CNN is agreeing and making suggestions as to who would be the best to be chairman of each committee. I think they all have another think coming. Unless they really have those machines over programmed they are not going to win back the House or the Senate. But as crooked as they are you can never tell they lie they cheat they steal they torture and have no ounce of respect for this country. It is a shame we can't REVOKE THEIR CITIZENSHIP.

3. Dem closes gap in race for Stupak's seat to within margin of error

Poll shows tight race for Stupak’s U.S. House 1st District seat
Nathan Hurst / Detroit News Washington Bureau

Washington — Republican Dan Benishek’s lead in the race for Michigan’s 1st District U.S. House seat has tightened, a poll released today shows.

Benishek leads state Rep. Gary McDowell, D-Rudyard, 42 percent to 39 percent in the survey of 404 likely voters released by Washington-insider newspaper The Hill. The three percentage point lead is within the 4.9 percent margin of error, and shows a significant shift from early post-primary internal polling in the district, which showed Benishek with double-digit advantages.

The latest poll was conducted by New York-based polling firm Penn Schoen Berland and sponsored by the American Natural Gas Institute.

The race between McDowell and Benishek for the seat being vacated by the retiring Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Menominee, is one of the nation’s most closely watched. Benishek had a significant advantage coming out of the primary, as he had announced his candidacy before Stupak announced his retirement, giving him more name recognition across the district, the largest by land area east of the Mississippi.

The two haven’t pulled any punches in the campaign, with McDowell and the Democrats highlighting Benishek’s support from the tea party as extreme, and Benishek and the Republicans tearing into McDowell for his vote in the Michigan Legislature to add a sales tax on services.

4. The MSM should be punished for their blatent support of the
Republicans. The MSM is worthless.

Voter turnout is what will dictate who wins not the MSM and the Republicans dancing in the end zone.

5. Well Said Maddie
The MSM has kept the GOP on life support for too long, for the most part they have lost credibility. Our belief in ourselves is what matters. Obviously moving forward as a nation will require our not only voting but running for office in much larger numbers. For this reason I am optimistic.

8. I'm glad Stupac is gone
he almost killed health care over his fetus fetish and then he got what he deserved when his own kind of ilk turned on him when he voted in favor of health care reform.

I still want single payer though.
