Alaska candidate’s ‘security’ firm allegedly tied to extremist militia

By Muriel Kane
Wednesday, October 20th, 2010 -- 12:54 pm

Alaska Senate candidate Joe Miller's use of private security guards who "arrested" and handcuffed a blogger-journalist following a Miller campaign event on Sunday is continuing to raise questions about the candidate's affiliations.

The latest allegation, which comes from a team of Alaskan bloggers, is that Dropzone Security Services and its owner William F. Fulton -- who led the security detail that detained Alaska Dispatch editor Tony Hopfinger -- are closely tied in with the so-called Alaska Citizens Militia and its leader, right-wing extremist Norm Olson.

"Joe Miller chose a security firm for his campaign event which is not only unlicensed," the bloggers assert, "but also right at the heart of an extreme militia group, with the owner of the security firm being a local commander of the militia and also the main supplier. This Alaskan militia is headed by the notorious Norm Olson, who played a major role in the radical militia movement in the 1990's in Michigan, a movement which is at least partly to blame for the Oklahoma bombing."

...............

Now, however, the spotlight being cast on William Fulton -- who regularly posts under the nickname "Dropzone Bill" at the public message board of Olson's Alaska Citizen's Militia -- is providing an even stronger link between Miller's campaign and the radical militia movement.

1. I think many of the teabagger candidates who will join congress
next year are backed by right-wing extremists. And as Frank rich pointed out Sunday, wins by Miller, Rubio, Angle, Paul, Lee, will lead to more and more extreme candidates being put forth over the next few years, and probably winning, at least in the west and South. Rough times ahead for sane citizens.

7. at least in the west and South.
Edited on Wed Oct-20-10 01:15 PM by AlbertCat
I know what you mean, but I would just like to remind people that KY is not the South really and not really West either (unless you're in the 18th century which Paul seems to be) And that the kookiest of the kooks, O'Donnell and Paladino, are most definitely not the South or the West. Of course they aren't winning, now are they? But they are the nuttiest.

My point being you don't need militias and the South for the crazy to be a threat. But also... your point about where these folks actually win is well taken.

I just don't want anyone to get too smug about regionalism.

On that note...

Every time I hear about something in AK, I think "What the hell is going on up there???"

4. How will this affect the two active military men who where working there without permission?
I'm curious, if this will hurt them more now than just being there without permission from their commander. SO just asked.."wonder if any ammo or fire arms came up missing around them?"

I remember back in the 90's after Waco, when there were news reports of soldiers stealing ammo and weapons from their unit's magazine.

22. I won't say that couldn't happen
Edited on Thu Oct-21-10 06:33 AM by RSillsbee
But it would be damned hard to get away with on any kind of large scale. I was in a unit that lost an M-16 in Germany in the late 80's, when the loss was discovered (with in the hour) the world stopped, the brass had us search the training area with a fine tooth comb for a month. they moved us all into tents and did searches of us at all hours. we weren't even allowed to use the one holers alone.

At the end of the month it was decided the weapon was gone and they shipped us all back to our home Kasern, Peden Barracks. The soldier that "lost" the weapon was busted down a rank and removed from his position as a section chief and the three soldiers most suspected in the disappearance were sent to the far ends of Germany were CID continued to to question them for 6 month before finally sending them back to our unit.

You might be able to get away with claiming combat loss now but it would be very difficult to get the weapon back into the country. I know one guy who claims he disassembled an M9 (pistol) and smuggled it back inside a fuel tank on a PLS after Desert Storm.

Again, I won't say it couldn't or hasn't happened but I'd be amazed if anyone got away with it to any extensive degree

Added clarification

5. So THAT'S where that POS Norm Olsen went.
I thought he went to Minnesota. After the Oklahoma City bombing, a lot of the militia types disappeared. Some were disillusioned, some just went deeper underground.

9. The "Lame Stream Media" they created
Remember how Conservatives spend months and months and millions going after Clinton's blow job, not to mention Travelgate and Vince Foster? And now they don't want to answer the rabid, scandal-seeking media's questions at all. Sorry Charlie, you created the climate and the precedent and now that rabid media YOU gave the go-ahead to is coming after you. Blow back much?

Have Repugs had even ONE good idea in the past 30 years?

I hope this makes him unacceptable to a huge % of Alaska. Can the Republicans force him off the ballot - or is it too late to replace him?

15. Maybe. They love heavily armed citizens, and elected as governor
a member of the Alaska Independence party, a group of secessionists. I would say that a large % of Alaskans is much more partial to the 2nd amendment than the 1st. This may well put him over the top.

26. It was a brief example what we saw in Alaska of Brown Shirt Nazi ism....
The Baggers are Nazis in drag....they wanna reduce Reason and Sanity in our Nation

The whole lot are brain impaired to the point of absurdity.....many of their wishes are NUTZ...some wanna fuck w the Vets Hospital, SS, Medicare, etc etc

One of them wants to drill for oil in the great lakes....

Others want to screen for terrorists at Arizona's norther Border coming in from Canada....The Canuks want an apology from Ms Angle...who

needs a lesson in geography...

Boner wanna go back to Bushies policies...including extending a .7 billion dollar tax giveaway to them billionaires...who will not spend

it to promote jobs as they say it will...but instead buy more islands in the sun for get a ways to sip on fine wine...and get drunk loaded....

The Nazis are here in the form of Pat Buchanan, Iott, and a few others....Soon, if not checked, they will spread and begin to fuck with our country....

Vote BLUE...its the only way at this point to stifle them

Gee, I remember when intelligence and sanity were considered good qualities.

The ghosts of Hancock, Revere and other authentic patriots are cringing and weeping.

the US is getting to be pretty much of a gangster state. As an update, it was decided yesterday that no one will be prosecuted over this terrorism.
