Black councilman told he should work in cotton field
By the CNN Wire Staff
October 21, 2010 9:12 a.m. EDT

(CNN) -- A squabble at a council meeting in a Georgia city has caught the attention of the NAACP after a white councilman told his black counterpart that he should be working in a cotton field.

The exchange took place in a recent Warner Robins City Council meeting near Macon, Georgia, said Larry Holmes, president of the NAACP in Houston County.

"They need to learn to respect each other, and they need to stop all the name calling," Holmes said.

"Ever since this new council was elected, there has been different problems. For one thing, they just can't seem to function there in a more pleasant and peaceful manner."

4. Councilman: Fellow Council Member Belongs In 'Cotton Field
Source: WSBTV

WARNER ROBINS, Ga. -- A heated exchange between two city council members in Warner Robins on Monday is sparking outrage.

During the exchange, councilman Daron Lee said, “I was disrespected last Monday. I’m getting tired of y’all talking to me any kind of way. I’m sorry, I’m not in the cotton field.”

Councilman John Williams responded, “You should be.”

“Oh, I should be? OK,” said Lee.

Lee is black. Williams is white.

Williams claimed his statement was not racist and said he once worked in a cotton field.

The NAACP sent a letter stating that council members who cannot represent everyone in the city should step down.

7. Yeah, well Mr. Williams...
...driving one of those big cotton pickers around is no where near the same as what your ancestors forced Mr. Lee's ancestors to do.
