Brown surges against Whitman in California governor race

By Jill Serjeant
LOS ANGELES | Sun Oct 24, 2010 3:07 pm EDT
(Reuters) - Democrat Jerry Brown has more than doubled his lead over Republican rival Meg Whitman in the California governor's race, gaining support from Latino voters after an illegal immigration furor over the former eBay chief's ex-housekeeper.

A Los Angeles Times/USC poll on Sunday gave Brown, the state's attorney general who first served as California governor from 1975 to 1983, a 13 point lead over Whitman. Brown has 52 percent support, compared to 39 percent for Whitman.

In the same poll a month ago, Brown had a five point overall lead over Whitman. Sunday's survey showed he now has a 36 percentage point lead over Whitman among Latino voters, up from 19 percent in September. Latinos make up one fifth of the California electorate and are seen as pivotal in deciding the governor's race.

The poll also found that with two weeks to go before the November 2 elections, three-term U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer maintains an eight point lead over first-time Republican challenger Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO.

Saw one on the road in Tampa wednesday. I guess that since Nashville is a recording industry hotspot, a lot of tour companies are also based out of there.

3. Seriously, it would be much better for Jerry to be Governor
especially if the Dems can get Single-Payer passed again next year.

But you'll still have to hold Jerry's feet to the fire -- he's unpredictable...

11. Seen written out, that's a ridiculous amount of money
to sink into a campaign for governor. Makes me wonder if there's not something else up beside being the queen of the state for someone who didn't vote for most of her adult life. It's mind boggling to me.

29. Come on, you KNOW there's something else
She sees this as an investment in her future--if she gets in there and goes all "business friendly" on us, she'll net lucrative board appointments and club memberships, and become even richer than she already is.

At some point, money changes from an item you use to buy things to an item you collect for its own sake. Meg is in the "collecting" point in her life.

38. Yes, I do. Exactly what, I'm not sure.
Never considered board and club memberships as comparable exchange for that kind of money. Was thinking along the lines of who or what entity really needs her as California governor at all costs.

52. jmowreader, I agree with you.
Do you remember the words from the song from Chicago,

Ask any of the chickies in my pen
They'll tell you I'm the biggest mother hen
I love 'em all and all of them love me
Because the system works
The system called reciprocity...

Got a little motto
Always sees me through
When you're good to Mama
Mama's good to you.

There's a lot of favors
I'm prepared to do
You do one for Mama
She'll do one for you.

They say that life is tit for tat
And that's the way I live
So, I deserve a lot of tat
For what I've got to give
Don't you know that this hand
Washes that one too
When you're good to Mama
Mama's good to you!

http://paroles.abazada.com/chanson,when-youre-good-to-mama,31509.htm

Meg Whitman wants to become California's Mama hen, the keeper of the keys.

People who strive to become very, very wealthy are driven by the desire for wealth. Unless they go through some spiritual epiphany, they don't change. Meg Whitman is driven. She is now collecting power. You are, in my opinion, very correct.

9. 50%+ support? Sweet.
Most of the polls I've seen on RealClearPolitics show that although Brown had slightly less than 50% favor, Brown had a lead of 5 points or more this month. Meanwhile, among independents, according to Public Policy Institute of CA Whitman has a 1-point lead. And Whitman still continues lying in her ads. GO JERRY!

18. good news, bad news and propaganda
After going to the source, the L.A. Times...

The Brown-Whitman poll interviewed 1,501 people, a good sample size. The margin of error is 3.2 percent. Also in the poll is the question "Who do you trust more?" in which Brown also leads Whitman, 44-24 percent.

The prop 19 poll cited in the Reuters story also comes from the L.A. Times. However, the sample size is 441 "likely voters," a very small sample. The margin of error with this poll is 4.6 percent (which to me makes it pretty worthless). So according to the error margin it could be anywhere from 55.6-34.4 to 46.4-43.6. That's anywhere between a 2.8-22.2 percent difference.

Reuters doesn't mention the polls were taken at different times, taken with much different sample sizes (Reuters doesn't report those at all) and that they were reported in the L.A. Times in two separate stories. (perhaps they want to give the impression that the questions were part of the same poll)

If you want to see the original story/stories at the source, go to the L.A. Times. Brown-Whitman is on the main page and type "Prop 19" in the search box.

We believe that no one is polling those under 30,

23. Because she had a primary challenger, Whitman's face has been
on tv for many months. I'm sick of looking at her, and I'm sure I'm not alone. She is trying to buy the governor's seat at a time when the current failed governor is also a repuke with a bunch of money and no prior government experience. I think the people of this state are ready to return a seasoned, experienced former governor and present attorney general to Sacramento rather than take their chances on a woman whose claim to fame is that she was CEO of an enterprise that consists of people selling stuff to each other over the internet. I can't wait for her to lose.

25. There is no accountability in the world of the CEO
No matter how bad you fuck up you are going to walk away from your job with the goldest of golden parachutes.

And most likely, through your network of interlocking corporate directorates, find another high paying CEO gig before you even cash the first dividend check from the stock options you cashed out.

I think this stupid woman lives in some sort of dream world. If she screws up in CA, she can always become the governor of, oh, I dunno, New York?

Managing the government is a hell of a lot harder than being the CEO of some dumbass corporation. In theory anyway, you actually have to produce.

33. And she got her ass kicked out of the Sonoma Farmers' Market.
This past Tuesday, she was in Sonoma in a big green bus with "Jobs are on the way" billboards on the side. They were driving all around town, which is two miles square and has a population of around 9,000. They would park the bus on the street and in front of some pretty influential Rebpublicans' houses.

They had the thing parked in front of Don Sebastiani's house, which is on my block. Don is a real rightie and is also "the" Sebastiani of wine fame.

So I walked on down to the bus to see what was up and, lo and behold, there was the Megster herself. I asked her what in the world she was doing in Sonoma, considering there are probably no more than 1,500 registered voters. "We are touring small towns in our bus and meeting people." I thought that rather strange because there is no in-between here, just hard-core Dems and the Other Guys.

Then, they drive four blocks to the Plaza.

Our Tuesday Markets on our Town Plaza are a really big deal. Hundreds of people show up.

So Meg and her bunch disembark right in front of the Plaza and get out, only to be confronted by Hilda - the director of the market.

You would have had to have been there.

Hilda- 80-something years old farmer's wife, WalMart clothes and a walker.

Meg Whitman, imperiously smug.

Hilda told her to leave because "politicking isn't allowed".

And leave, they did.

Meg Whitman backed down to an old woman with a walker.

I wish I would have had a camera.

The whole thing is in Kathleen Hill's article from 10/22 at www.sonomanews.com.

Do not buy Sebastiani wine.

Sonoman

Hoping millions are fed up with the multi-millions of secret-dollars funneled into right wing "genuine grass roots" campaigns to defeat President Obama's push for change and rush to the polls to vote those suckers out.

Hoping the Obama younger voters rush out there too. They can see through the disgusting overt and dangerous propaganda of the professional right. Hope they make a firm stand against it and we all get together to push for more solid progressive change in the years ahead.
