Khadr trial to resume without deal: lawyer

One of Omar Khadr's Canadian lawyers says his client's war crimes trial will resume as scheduled Monday and that no plea agreement has been reached.

"All I can tell you is there's a trial tomorrow and there's no deal in place as of this particular moment," Dennis Edney said Sunday, speaking to reporters covering the trial in Cuba.

In the last two weeks, speculation emerged about a deal that would see Khadr, 24, plead guilty to five war crimes charges, including killing a U.S. soldier in Afghanistan in 2002.

Nathan Whitling, Khadr's other civilian lawyer, said a plea bargain, if reached, may not be announced until Monday. "I'm hopeful," he said.

Patrick Parrish, has dismissed defense motions to exclude reported confessions the youth made to interrogators who used harsh techniques, including threats of rape, in getting him to say he threw the grenade that killed Sgt. 1st Class Christopher Speer.

It is not a war crime to defend your country from attack, even if you are not an official member of an army.

It is a war crime to torture detainees.

There should be a war crimes trial, just not this one.
