Indonesia on volcano eruption alert
Edited on Tue Oct-26-10 05:10 AM by Turborama
Source: Al Jazeera English

Indonesian scientists have warned of a pressure build-up beneath Mount Merapi's lava dome, as authorities continue to evacuate tens of thousands of villagers to temporary shelters.

An avalanche of rocks spilled down Merapi's slopes before dawn on Tuesday and gusts of ash rose 50 metres into the air as the mountain continued to rumble.

Surono, a government volcanologist, said the greatest concern was pressure building behind a massive lava dome that has formed near the tip of the crater.

"The energy is building up. ... We hope it will release slowly," he said. "Otherwise we're looking at a potentially huge eruption, bigger than anything we've seen in years."

I live at the base of a live volcano. It's not Merapi, though.

4. Terrified Indonesians flee erupting volcano
The peak of Mount Merapi was clouded with smoke, a Reuters photographer said, making it impossible to see if lava was spewing out, but that ash had started raining down on frightened residents.

"They cannot see the mountain but the ash is suddenly all around, so they are coming down in a panic," he said. "People are screaming. Hundreds of people are fleeing."

6. Several people have been injured by hot ash and a 2 month old baby has died
A reporter near Mount Merapi witnessed up to 20 people being taken away for treatment after ash rained down on local residents.

And a two-month old baby reportedly died when its mother ran away in panic as the eruption began just before dusk, local time.

Adi Mulyanto, an emergency ward doctor at the Panti Nugroho Hospital in Sleman, confirmed that at least six people had been badly burned by hot air bursting out of the volcano.

"Three of those people have been rushed to hospital with burns to more than 80% of their bodies," he said.

7. Update: Up To 19 People Killed As Volcano Erupts (Article & Video Report)
Alex Watts and Carole Erskine, Sky News Online

Up to 19 people have been killed after Indonesia's most volatile volcano began spewing hot ash.

Scientists have warned that pressure building beneath Mount Merapi's lava dome could trigger one of the most powerful blasts in years.

"There was a thunderous rumble that went on for ages, maybe 15 minutes," said a local farmer.

"Then huge plumes of hot ash started shooting up into the air."

Some 11,400 villagers on the 2,968-metre high mountain have been urged to evacuate.
