San Francisco Minimum Wage To Hit Nearly $10 an Hour
Source: SF Weekly

... Come Jan. 1, San Francisco's minimum wage will be just shy of 10 bucks -- $9.92 to be exact. And businesses with a service contract with San Francisco or property lease at the airport will be required to pay out at least $11.69. Those numbers are currently $9.79 and $11.54.

How many workers will this affect? It turns out that's a very good question.

The good people at the San Francisco Living Wage Coalition had no idea. The state Employment Development Department could only narrow down the 10th percentile of wages earned in San Francisco and San Mateo Counties to $10.28. As far as tracking minimum wage-earners, "We're not sure if anyone keeps track of that information," said EDD labor market analyst Jorge Villalobos. "It's very hard to pin down."

... The forthcoming uptick is calculated by the controller's office as an annual Cost of Living Increase. This year it was 1.3 percent. Minimum wage statewide, incidentally, is $8 an hour.

1. It will effect me.
Believe it or not, I live in SF on minumum wage. There are some months I am scrounging in the sofa cushions hoping to find a dollar in quarters so I can get a Taco Bell tostada, but this job allows me to take massive anmounts of time of on very short notice so I can care for my elderly Mom. And they don't dock my pay. It's a helluva tradeoff but it's what I need for right now.

I must say I am glad to hear I'll be getting a bit of a raise next year! :D

6. Have you considered becoming an IHSS caregiver?
In-Home Supportive Services pays thousands of Californians, including family members, to serve as caregivers, and in SF, the pay is considerably higher than minimum wage. Drawback: Arnie and the repukes have instituted an onerous series of background checks, fingerprinting (for consumers as well as providers!), etc. :grr:

7. Hmmm...
I might have to check into that once it's time Mom moves back to SF. Right now she is still independent an in Tahoe but requires loads of help with illnesses, surgeries, home maintenance, and other general needs. :hi:

9. In that case, she should be able to qualify for a caregiver up there
which would take some of the load off you in terms of shuttling up there all the time.

5. When it finally get OVER ten bucks a hour, a single person then will be able to survive as poor.
$12. bucks an hour people can survive at being poor....even better if they make $12. bucks an hour working for a food joint - that allows them to eat some of their meals.

8. Don't forget...
The living wage law is why Bank of America moved their national headquarters out of SF to Charlotte. "Ooooh! well I'm going home and taking my ball with me." Pricks acting like entitled little children get me all "stabby".

Some really serious shit's gonna go down in most of our lifetimes (I'm 40). And jackoffs like B of A will do their own version of kicking and screaming (imprisoning and killing).

10. Do any workers in SF have wages tied to the minimum wage?
this may affect more people than just those making the minimum.

11. They have a 10 dollar minimum wage
and in Illinois we have a guy running for governor who says he wants to lower the minimum wage from 8.25 to who knows what(Brady is such a horrible person, if he gets elected he's going to cause so much harm)
