GOP Eyes $100B in Post-Election Spending Cuts
Source: CBS News/AP

Confident of Wresting Control of House from Dems, Republicans Begin Planning 2011 Agenda

(CBS/AP) Republican leaders, ever more confident of their chances of winning control of the House and possibly even the Senate, have begun plotting a 2011 agenda topped by a push for more than $100 billion in spending cuts, tax reductions and attempts to undo key parts of President Barack Obama's health care and financial regulation laws.

The question is how much of the GOP's government-shrinking, tax-cutting agenda to advance, and how fast.

It's certain that Republicans want to capitalize quickly on tea party-fueled anger and the antiestablishment fervor that they believe will provide momentum to accomplish an activist to-do list. It's equally clear, however, that the outsized expectations of a fed-up electorate and a crop of unruly newcomers could complicate the plans. So could Mr. Obama and fellow Democrats who will still be around after Tuesday's elections.

GOP lawmakers are publicly mum about much of what they intend to do if they prevail in midterm congressional contests. Many say privately they want to avoid appearing to "measure the drapes" for new leadership offices before winning any majority.

But especially in the House - where Republicans have a clear shot at scoring the 40-seat gain they would need for control - they are in intense internal talks about how a GOP-driven agenda would work.

12. Well, we ALL know it will be SS, Medicare, and ANYTHING that..........
........pertains to working, middle class and poor. Hell, they'll probably increase the defense budget to cover that newfangled "lasers in space" weapon.

On Bloomberg today they reported a poll result which indicated 40% would vote repuke even though they don't agree with repuke policies

How self-destructive can you be?

5. I don't know a whole lot about the operations process....but they need more than a "majority" to...
change things, correct?

Like to overturn the Health Care bill they would need 2/3 support, wouldn't they?

What all can they really cut or change just by having a "majority" in numbers?

6. $100 billion? That's it????
That's their massive "spending cut?" Oh, it is to fucking laugh. These assholes waste a fucking trillion or more on their Iraqi boondoggle, all the while funneling straight cash into the coffers of their various military contractor constituencies, then run around complaining about the deficit that they themselves created through greed and stupidity. And they pledge to cut cut cut cut cut!

And their plan is to cut $100 billion, a fucking drop in the bucket of the Federal budget? That's their ambitious plan?

What a pack of buffoons.

16. I know how to do it
Cut $50 billion out of the defense budget. Take the rest out of federal disbursements to states that have majority-GOP delegations.

I figure it like this: If the teabaggers and the Repukes think we can get ourselves out of the GOP-created hole we're in through slash-and-burn governance, let them slash and burn things that are important to them.

17. how about a bill
that limits what each state can receive to no more than a certain percent above what it puts in. What percent would that be? 5 or so?

20. There's one HUGE problem with that
If we limited federal disbursements to a state to only a certain percentage over what they put in, we'd also have to legalize commercial whaling.

I'm certain I'm going to hear all sorts of horror over that pronouncement but hear me out: according to http://www.dced.state.ak.us/dca/logon/fedspend/fedspend_bud.htm one-third of Alaska's economy is supported by federal spending. Alaska, last I checked, is the biggest recipient state (meaning federal disbursements are higher than tax revenues) in America. If we cut federal spending to five percent above tax revenues, the economy of Alaska would revert to what it was before statehood, and also the diet of Alaskans...and back then, whale was a very important part of the Alaskan diet.
