How Holly Petraeus Came to Join the Obama Administration
Source: ABC News

So how did Hollister (Holly) Knowlton Petraeus come to be named to the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, as will happen Thursday?

Petraeus first got involved with helping military families deal with financial scammers when her husband, Gen. David Petraeus, commanded the 101stAirborne Division and she saw military families suffer during deployments because scammers and predatory lenders victimized them to the point that their finances were in such disarray sometimes troops even needed to return to the base from abroad to deal with the problems.

Six years ago, she went to work for the Better Business Bureau, becoming director of the Better Business Bureau Military Line, a partnership between the Bureau and the Pentagon’s Financial Readiness Campaign, which does consumer education and advocacy for servicemembers. In that capacity, Petraeus has been working with the Treasury Department on these issues for years.

-----

A couple weeks later, Warren reached out Petraeus for advice on how to address these issues, sources tell ABC News. The two met in October and have kept up a conversation since then. Within the context of those conversations, the idea of Petraeus coming to the new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was raised.

1. Obama is up to his ears in these people. That's fine.
His choice.

2. What's the objection here?
She has relevant experience and Warren herself reached out to her. Plus, it puts a dent in her husband running in 2012.

5. We're missing key information
which is why did Warren reach out to Petraeus in particular?

What a pathetic excuse for journalism, that omits the key piece of information. This story could have completely different character depending on the answer to that question!

6. It's hard to believe that anyone married to someone
as profoundly corrupt as David Patraeous has any business being within fifty miles of a consumer protection anything. And Warren's recommendation is on her conscience, not mine.

15. I could be married to a dick and still be a good, honest person. God knows
I've lived with some and was able to maintain my good heart. Maybe she honestly doesn't see the down side to Patraeus -- and still wants to do good?

If Warren requested her, that calms me somewhat.

25. I don't know about that
This is a woman who, per the article, has worked with the BBB for 6 years to try to protect or help military families dealing with exactly those issues.

It also may go back to the role of women married to very successful men a few generations ago. Here, she as Petraeous' wife likely had access to the power and used it to try to help military families. It does not surprise me at all that some wives of high ranking military people would feel that "their job" was to help the troops.

I'm sorry, but your whole "reasoning" is for shit ... "She has to be bad because of whom she married." GTFOOH.

You have never met the woman, know nothing about her and I'd hazard to guess that but for this article, didn't know the woman existed.

13. 1. She can be influence by job offer to her husband one he retire which I don't think will be that
long give how bad things are going Afghanistan.

2. She is no where near as qualified as Warren and the first head of the agency will set how independent it will be from outside influence.

I don't see any manor in which it will reduce the likely hood of her husband running for office.

14. Except
"2. She is no where near as qualified as Warren and the first head of the agency will set how independent it will be from outside influence."

...Warren is hiring her for a position dealing with military families, not to head the agency.

3. Actually she may be a very good choice
since fraud is rampant with the military. Senior enlisted (significant others) and senior officers (significant others) play a role in this in every base around the country.

It was those efforts that had the short term lenders closed near San Diego bases, for example.

That must have been half of the town when I was stationed there.

24. I know nothing of her except what was in the op's article
Here, it seems that she has been working for 6 years to help military families conned by predatory lenders. This is a good thing for the wife of a high military officer to be doing and her motivation seems obvious. She genuinely cares for the military families - this is not partisan.

It sounds like she worked with the better business bureau and that she impressed Elizabeth Warren. I trust Warren both to be trying to do the right thing and hiring capable people.

It is also an interesting choice as it might make it harder for the Republicans to defund it - as they will have a new advocate who can reach many Republicans.
