Source: Sky News

A 25-year-old new recruit to the Police Service of Northern Ireland has died after being caught up in a booby-trap car bomb.

The device exploded under the vehicle outside the Catholic officer's home in Omagh, Co Tyrone, just before 4pm.

Sky's Northern Ireland correspondent Vicki Hawthorne said: "Police have confirmed that some kind of device exploded underneath the car.

"They say the vehicle belonged to a new recruit of the Police Service of Northern Ireland and that he was a Catholic officer."

The article later mentions there's a likelihood that fingers will be pointed at Catholic extremists who are trying to "discourage young Catholics from joining the police service".

3. Al Jazeera English: N. Ireland Car bomb targets police
Northern Ireland police say a bomb has exploded under a car in the town of Omagh.

The AFP news agency reports that a policeman was killed in the attack on Saturday when the bomb went off in a car parked at his house.

Since 2007, Irish Republican Army dissidents have planted dozens of booby-trap bombs under the private cars of police officers.

The bombs usually fail to detonate and have killed nobody. But two policemen have lost their legs in attacks in May 2008 and January 2010.

5. I thought Northern Ireland was pretty much over this shit
Does it occur to anyone in the UK that this was a terrorist incident of another type, rather than Catholic-Protestant tensions?

9. Religious hatreds do not die so easily. The history of Europe seems to bear this out. nt

11. It does take a long time for religious hatreds to die
But as the UK and France are no longer at war with each other, there is hope for the rest of Europe when it comes to this. I had that hope for Northern Ireland.

I'm still not convinced that this was not islamic religious hate for christian people. That seems to be the chief source of religious tension in Europe these days.

7. Utterly futile
Murdering policemen does not advance their cause in the slightest.
