Trial continues for alleged Serbian prison guard

The trial of a Port Coquitlam man accused of committing war crimes in Bosnia nearly two decades ago has stirred up powerful emotions amongst witnesses who have come from as far as Sweden to testify.

At the civil trial underway in Federal Court in Vancouver this week, Crown prosecutors are seeking a declaration Brancko Rogan obtained his citizenship through false representation in 1994 when he applied for refugee status.

The Crown alleges Rogan failed to disclose his alleged past as a guard at the Belica detention facility where Bosnian Muslims were victimized during the civil war that broke out in 1992.

If the Crown does convince the court that the 49-year-old former Serbian was complicit in the commission of crimes against humanity, it would be the first-ever citizenship revocation for war crimes committed after the Second World War in Canadian history.
