New Irish terror groups are threat to UK, warn police
Source: The Guardian

Dissident republicans have developed the capability to mount an attack on the British mainland, according to the latest security assessment. Senior counter-terrorism sources confirmed the threat from dissidents attacking the mainland "now goes beyond an aspiration" and that they now possess the means to mount an attack across the Irish Sea.

Amid rising tension in the province and fears of an "Easter offensive" by dissident groups, police in Northern Ireland also warned that anti-ceasefire republicans were plotting to kill more police officers.

The increased threat from republican dissidents is certain to heighten security concerns during the build-up to the royal wedding on Friday, although there is no intelligence suggesting a specific plot related to the event.

4. What cowardly fuckers these people are
Here's something from the Guardian story;

In further evidence of growing confidence among extremist republican groups, a leading figure in one of the dissident groups' political wings announced that the Queen should be considered a "legitimate target" during her visit to Ireland in May. The general secretary of the hardline Republican Sinn Féin party, Josephine Hayden, said she would have no problem with a sniper targeting the Queen. "You might say that she is just a little old grandmother," said Hayden, "but it is what she represents, what she symbolises that counts. She is a legitimate target."

Sniper targeting, setting off bombs in public places...unspeakable evil, funded by the ignorant.

5. Funded by lazy cowards who want the "troubles" to continue
only to line their pockets. It's not about religion anymore, the average NI bloke could give a care about prods & catholics.

6. "What cowardly fuckers these people are;"
As a 'black' Irishman I do not understand your hatred. The British have killed untold millions in the 500 years that they have 'ruled' the Western world.

Cowards let millions die of starvation.

Cowards fire automatic guns into unarmed crowds protesting being a second class citizen in their own country.

Cowards won't let a people speak or learn their own native tongue.

Cowards beget cowards. The modern term is terrorist.

Remember, remember the 5th of November.

But I am a pacifist. Too bad not all people are.

"unspeakable evil, funded by the ignorant." A downtrodden people will resort to guerilla tactics when they are forced into hiding. It was used in the US's Revolutionary War, Vietnam, Iraq and so many other conflicts. Yes, I agree the killing must stop but you seem so upset because these terrorists might take out the Queen of England. By all accounts she is a nasty old bitty, raised a couple of near idiots who raised complete idiots.

14. You are aware that roughly 2/3rds of residents in Northern Ireland believe
that NI should remain in the Union for the long term. I'm guessing one means Northern Ireland when demanding the return of Ireland to the Irish. Most with in the Province con sider themselves to be British, so in order to give Northern Ireland to the Irish a UK government would have to ignore the votes of an over whelming majority of it's citizens.

Oh yeah, please don't give approval to a comment that tacitly approves of killing our Head of State. In Britain, both mainland and Ulster, we love and support Obama. When I tell people I had the honour of voting for him, I'm always met with thanks.

15. Many Americans are really ignorant about NI.
They remind me of the teabaggers and other thugs. They ignorantly repeat the same nonsense and with their mob mentality, they think terrorism and murdering Heads of State is okay because they believe they are on the side of might and therefore right. In reality it's not what the majority of the residents want, but they don't care to find out.

Regular little Honey Badgers.

10. No, it was ugly and it was a glossing over of terrorism...
The terrorist attacks carried out against British civilians was every bit as appalling as the terrorist attacks that were carried out on Israelis, yet I've still to see anyone at DU go in to bat for Hamas the same way...

9. It doesn't take hatred to call terrorists cowardly fuckers...
Those who attack civilians for political purposes are terrorists, even though 'guerilla' sounds far more romantic. Here's something for you to ponder over. They're every bit as bad as what the British did to the Irish, so if yr Irish as you claim, you should be able to understand why someone would call the sort of people who'd bomb civilians 'cowardly fuckers'. Then again, it does come across that you appear to believe that when Irish terrorists attack British civilians, they're not cowardly fuckers, but the same can't be said when the boot's on the other foot...

And others on this board fall hook line and rod for Irish Republican Propaganda. Lets not forget that many died in mainland Britain as a result of starvation. This was starvation brought on by the cruelty of the capitalist system that systematically deprived many of food and income in the name of making a few bob. Yeah I know the cruelty of Cromwell is nothing that should ever be forgotten, but that does not justify men in ski masks blowing up hotels and killing people.

Don't forget that there is an eb and flow to torment. The English experienced what the Irish went through only it was centuries earlier and at the hands of the Normans. The English, known as Jutes, and Anglo-Saxons saw their culture and values seized by outsiders. Now, if we follow your logic, it is ok for a band of English 'freedom fighters' to try and kill the French president. Also, is it ok for Native Americans, who died in far greater numbers than the Irish, to target the US president? I don't think so. We don't dwell on and use centuries old strife to justify today's atrocities. Shame on you for trying to justify the actions of the IRA, most in Ulster itself deplore this sort of thing.

Oh and someone who seems to insinuate that killing H.M. The Queen is somehow ok, is not a pacifits.

Everyone in the British isles (with the exception of CIRA) are moving on with piece and friendship.

Edit for grammar...

12. The American yahoos who fund this violence should stop
Yes, British treatment of the Irish was HORRIBLE. I know that personally. My bloodline hails back to a few Irish families who migrated after massacres or were evicted from their land and given a one-way ticket to the typhus-ridden intake centers in Canada. But this wave seems to be violence for violence's sake. What possible constructive effect could it have, now or in the future?

What an awful set of developments.
