Dmitry Medvedev is first Kremlin leader in 20 years to visit Chernobyl

Dmitry Medvedev became the first Kremlin leader to visit the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in more than two decades on Tuesday, issuing a call for new tougher global rules on nuclear safety.

"It is of vital importance that we understand what kind of force humankind is dealing with," he warned.

In a visit timed to coincide with the twenty fifth anniversary of the world's worst nuclear disaster, Mr Medvedev joined Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine's president, in a series of poignant memorial ceremonies for the dozens of people who died in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.

The accident, on 26 April 1986, occurred after a test went badly wrong, and the plant's fourth reactor blew up sending a deadly plume of radiation into the air. "Millions of people were irradiated," Mr Medvedev said, "and hundreds of thousands lost their health, their blood, and their land."
