U.S. says Gaddafi troops raping, issued Viagra: envoys
Source: Reuters

The U.S. envoy to the United Nations told the Security Council on Thursday that troops loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi were increasingly engaging in sexual violence and some had been issued the impotency drug Viagra, diplomats said.

Several U.N. diplomats who attended a closed-door Security Council meeting on Libya told Reuters that U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice raised the Viagra issue in the context of increasing reports of sexual violence by Gaddafi's troops.

"Rice raised that in the meeting but no one responded," a diplomat said on condition of anonymity. The allegation was first reported by a British newspaper.

26. Gadaffi is, when you truly think about it, a very different fish to Sadam.
For all his faults, including the two truly nasty sons he raised (or allowed others to raise), Sadam Hussein was not a particularly bad leader as leaders go. He kept the peace.

4000 dead Kurds put down in an uprising might seem like a lot. However, even using conservative figures, that is approximately the number dying every single month as a result of the occupation of Iraq.

And even that pales into insignificance next to the butcher's bill attatched to events such as Rwanda, and the monthly toll of some resource harvesting operations in places like the Congo.

BTW: I'm no fan of Sadam's role as a US tool in his earlier days.

Gadaffi on the other hand has ALWAYS been a loose cannon.

11. The only thing it convinced me of is the US has a BONER...for troops on the ground.
And it wouldn't be such a big deal- except lies like this collectively help manufacture consent. And all of a sudden you wake up one day and 12 US troops are reported dead in what was a place our government was only supposed to be enforcing a no-fly zone in.

10. Sounds like
Rape, no doubt. Sanctioned rape, fueled by drugs, unlikely.

Awaiting independent verification, don't hold your breath.

5. Rape rooms, how original. I'll bet MoMo feeds his enemies into
shredders feet 1st too. I'll bet they are ripping the babies from their incubators and letting them die on the floor too, and what about those mobile chemical labs.
Sounds so familiar somehow.

7. "Rice raised that in the meeting but no one responded,"
I'm sorry, I just couldn't help myself (I am kinda wasted).

Somehow, this horrific tactic has managed to stay beneath the radar for far too long.

I have often wondered why. Is it just too awful and taboo to address?

I have no problem with mayhem amongst combatants, but there should be a global outrage and response to this outrage.

12. Oh, I have reasons to doubt it...
I suppose I should have been more Sudan, etc.-specific in my reply.

But I do not doubt that they could/would adopt the same tactic. That shit is truly "Shock and Awe".

The viagra part sounds pretty fishy, though.

20. It sounds to me like Rice is selling something
because she's been in the position before to address real rape and she did nothing. She had the gavel in the Security Council and she shut down the discussion. So, her cred on the topic is questionable.

29. Is there evidence to suggest that that rape was sanctioned?
The reports coming out suggest sanctioned rape, for the simple reason that a young woman who is raped in the Arab world loses all honor. Hopefully post-Gaddafi Libya will enshrine it in to law that said women were not dishonored.

kidnapping, torturing, raping and killing, Susan Rice prevented the whole discussion from being opened up in the Security Council.

27. It comes from reports from doctors in Ajdabiya.
Al Jazeera reported it initially: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYmdyy1kRoo

The doctors could be lying, but Rice didn't make up the report.

37. In briefly trying to root out where this story had originally come from, there was a variant where..
...the mercenaries were being given Viagra and hallucinogens. Because, you know, nothing makes an army effective like pumping them full of LSD. I mean, come on. Aren't hiring mercenaries who will make Blackwater look like a boyscout troop...isn't that bad enough?

To go throwing these ridiculous addendums on top of that is pointless and counterproductive.
