BREAKING Rick Snyder recall langauge approved. His days as governor are numbered.
Source: DailyKos

Hello everyone from sunny Michigan. This afternoon the Detroit Free Press is reporting that a panel of Washrenaw County judges voted 2-1 to approve the language of a recall petition to remove Gov. Rick Snyder from office.

What this means is that we Michiganders have 90 days from today to gather 800,000 signatures and force a recall election.

I am posting this because Eclectablog must still be working. I assure you he will be on top of this shortly. I just wanted to break the news.

Yipppeeeeee,

Now, if both Snyder and Walker are successfully recalled, this would
put a damper on other power-mad Repub. governors. They'll realize
that they'll have to behave more like human beings, for a change.

33. They prolly won't change very much....they have committed a sin..
Campaign on change but when in office....pushed for more tax cuts for the rich, etc...on the backs of the working class.

I hope nx year is the year of Reason and its return from MIA status....

82. I hope next year will be the year of reason, too. As for having
committed a sin, I don't think Neocons believe in sin (or they wouldn't be behaving the way they do). It's all for
political purposes. Some Teabaggers could believe in sin though. They probably have some odd way of explaining to
themselves why it's right to give more to the rich and take away from the poor and help them dies more quickly.

55. Not for a year
Wisconsin elected officials have to serve for a year before they can be recalled.

This actually works better for us: Walker is doing all the anti-humanity shit he's doing because it's going to fix the state's economy. Unfortunately for him, what he's doing is going to make it worse.

If for some reason the economic cycle can manage to pull Wisconsin out of the disaster it's in he might not get recalled in 2012. If it doesn't--and the tax cuts he signed have pulled the economy down so far I don't think it will come back--he is history next year.

Right now, the best case scenario is the Koch Brothers get tired of losing money thanks to their handpicked governor and order him to resign.

Seems to me that all they need to do is collect signatures from everyone left in Detroit, then hit Benton Harbor, and Ann Arbor naturally, and this guy is so gone. Toss in Flint and Saginaw, and it will be a total rout. Get rid of this guy, and send a message!

62. What's wrong with a 50 state strategy
People all over the country are angry about what is going on. Why not get the base + independents + defecting GOP to practice for 2012 by getting people registered to vote and then start hundreds of recall petitions at the state level, in all states that support recalls, on everybody who is for tax breaks for corporations, tax cuts for the rich, no regulations or tariffs and balancing the budget on the backs of the middle class. Karl Rove and his minions have had the 2012 campaign figured out for the last year or two. Imagine how they would try to deal with a grass roots tsunami of angry people gathering signatures all across the country. You could even have the newly homeless help out in a very meaningful way.

Instead of blathering about "sending a message", let the people in Washington see their state colleges getting thrown out on their butts and their assured majorities reversed. What would better assist a Washington democrat to grow a spine. What would better convince them that becoming/being a blue dog is political suicide.

The corporations have declared war on the middle class and the American Democracy. Overthrowing the constitution is treason so let's not talk worry about needing any extra reasons why someone with a copy on Ayn Rand in their pocket should be recalled.

Finally, what could be a better way of debugging the election process with all the tricks the Rovians have planned with machines, voter caging, provisional ballots etc. Maybe we could even get a progressive state attorney general in power who will indict some of these traitors before 2011. If enough of this happens the corporate media might even get scared enough to cover it.

Beware of people who purposely sign petitions with phony names or those who sign but are not registered voters. When does it start, I have relatives in Ann Arbor who will be glad to sign on.

Koch brothers and superpacs will fund, but Democrats never seem to have the same kind of money--and our states sure can't afford endless campaigns and elections. Government will not be able afford that kind of disruption, either. Little enough good stuff gets done as it is.

because we don't like what was voted in seems like opening a huge can of crap in the future. I understand the frustration though and don't disagree that steps need to be taken. I just see this becoming the norm now from both sides.

78. That's not the case.
It's when an elected official comes in as a Trojan Horse, campaigning on one thing and then ramming through very bad stuff like Snyder with his Financial Martial Law, it gives the people a chance to step in.

Especially when corruption in the legislature prevents them from doing their duty of removing him, or when they are in collusion.

94. Republicans lie?! Say it ain't so!
Anyone could have voted for a good candidate; Bernero. I listened to their debate and was amazed when I heard a few days later that Snyder was still polling ahead. People are fucking idiots. Instead of having recalls, I think it would be better to work towards campaign finance reform, fair redistricting laws, instant run off voting, etc. Having recalls will just perpetuate the shit we've got already. Remember, stupid recalls are what gave the world The Governator.

85. DEAD on.
We elected a Democratic mayor and as soon as possible the fucktards on the right filed a recall. Sadly, they even got enough signatures. Thus, we had to go through paying for an unsuccessful recall vote. All because people were pissed with the way the original vote turned out and not because anything illegal was done. Sadly, I expect to see more of this.

People need to remember that elections have consequences.

88. I agree
It seems that this will now become the norm, and its the taxpayers that end up paying for it. There is always consequences to elections, and one side or the other is always disappointed in losing, and now they will be overturning or recalling elected officials left and right and sometimes to no avail. Patience I think should prevail because there is always another election coming, but in today's society we want things yesterday. Again, I understand the situation to a degree, but I think the precedent is unmoving.

when he ran for office.

Fact 2. After the MEA and other unions challenged Snyder he added to the pot for his crony millionaire friends

Fact 3. There is now reported, finally, a surplus of money in Michigan which Snyder and his Senate and House crooked friends tried to keep secret from the population.

Edited on Sat Apr-30-11 05:52 PM by cascadiance
I know there are term limits that kept her running again earlier, but since she will have been out of office while Snyder is in, could she run again, like so many other recently governors have done (Branstadt, Brown, Kitzhaber)? Not saying she would be my first choice, but just wonder if she's an option in the recall election?

105. I'm pretty sure she's out for good.
In the case of Brown, he could run again because the term limit law was passed after he was governor. I'm pretty sure the law had gone into effect before Granholm was first elected. In any case, I think she would be horrible - she was an awful governor, just better than a Republican would have been.

What makes you think that? Sure, I voted for her - twice - but was never happy about it. If you haven't noticed, Michigan is fucked. It's the only - as in, one out of 50 - state to actually lose population over the last ten years. Who was governor for most of those years? What did she do? I'll give it to you that the deck was stacked against us, but she just seemed to sit there, watch things going wrong, and talk about giving kids laptops and making "cool" cities. I think Bernero would be great. He wasn't running on the basis of having an adorable blonde family and really not liking child abuse and kiddie porn (if you remember the junk mail from her first campaign).

114. MI lost population
Edited on Sun May-01-11 08:10 PM by blue_onyx
because the auto industry collapsed. She, nor any other governor, couldn't have stopped that. To imply it's in anyway her fault is ridiculous.

Granholm had a great economic strategy. Her goal was to diversify MI's economy into four areas: health care, advanced manufacturing, alternative energy, and defense. Sectors that would be less likely to outsourced and/or drew on our strengthens. Additionally, her incentive program for the film industry added a 5th sector to diversifying the economy. She strategy has been great and has been working. Unfortunately, the auto job losses has prevented many (including many Dems) from viewing Granhlom's administration in the correct light. Here are a few example of good news during her term:

"When it comes to renewable energy, economic development officials in Michigan could be laughing all the way to the bank.

Michigan's renewable energy policy has attracted billions of dollars in investments over the last two years while neighboring Indiana sat idly by. The developments are expected to create thousands of jobs in manufacturing -- a blow to industrial areas like Northwest Indiana."

http://www.indianaeconomicdigest.net/main.asp?SectionID=31&SubSectionID=135&ArticleID=57183

"Michigan job gains at 10-year high

California and Michigan, which each suffered some of the worst job losses during the recession, are adding jobs again. California last month had its single best month for job creation in more than two decades.

Michigan, meanwhile, added 71,000 jobs last year. That's the first sustained job gain the state has had in the past decade, said Sophia Koropeckyj, a managing director at Moody's Analytics.

Michigan's unemployment rate has plummeted from 13.5 percent to 10.4 percent, the biggest drop in the nation."

http://detnews.com/article/20110326/BIZ/103260331/Michigan-job-gains-at-10-year-high#ixzz1L9V4YtP1

There's has been quite a bit of good news during the last year or two of Granholm's term. I just don't care to spend time looking it all up.

Regarding your "He wasn't running on the basis of having an adorable blonde family and really not liking child abuse and kiddie porn" comment. What did he run on? Nothing. That's why he lost so badly. He opposed things like a graduated income tax and sided with the GOP in opposing a new bridge to Canada (which would've created 10,000 construction jobs). He couldn't get the Democrats to the polls. I know typically Democratic leaning voters (one of whom is a public school teacher) who stayed home. He was a poor candidate. His opposition was Dillon so of course he looked better than he really was. If this recall is success (unlikely given the number of signatures needed), I hope he doesn't run. I would prefer someone like Gretchen Whitmer.

115. But isn't this the problem?
On many levels there wasn't anything that someone in state government could have done to fix the problems. However, I don't think making an argument that it would have been worse with someone else really flies, and I'm sorry that that's probably why so many people voted for Snyder (shudder to think).

in the state government could've changed what happened in the auto industry. The governor isn't in charge of running those companies.

That wasn't my argument at all. My argument was Granholm's economic polices were good.

I heard the guy leading the recall effort on Frank Beckmann's show and he was really unprepared.
