MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Dane County judge is allowing election officials a few more weeks to review eight recall petitions against Wisconsin state senators. All eight elections would be held on July 12, barring legal challenges.
The Wisconsin Government Accountability Board normally has 31 days after a recall petition is submitted to determine whether it has enough valid signatures to trigger a recall election. However, Lewis Beilin, an attorney for GAB, said the "unprecedented" mix of multiple recalls, a statewide recount for the Supreme Court election and several special elections would make it impossible for the board to meet their original review deadline.
According to GAB's timeline, the board would review challenges to the petitions of Sen. Randy Hopper of Fond du Lac, Dan Kapanke of La Crosse and Luther Olsen of Ripon on May 23. They would then meet on May 31 to review challenges to petitions for five other senators — two Republicans and three Democrats. If there were enough valid signatures, GAB could then certify all the petitions between May 31 and June 3.
