One of the most vocal academic proponents for loosening Michigan's stem cell law is leaving the state to do research elsewhere, officials announced today.

Sean J. Morrison, director of the Center for Stem Cell Biology at University of Michigan, is departing the university to lead a new pediatric research initiative at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

Morrison — one of Michigan's most prominent stem cell scientists and known internationally — was a leader in the successful 2008 campaign to amend the state constitution to allow for embryonic stem cell research, known as Proposal 2. Among his many arguments were that if the laws remained the same the best researchers wouldn't come to the state, and others would leave.

"Unfortunately, the fighting in Lansing continues," said Daniel Heumann, a patient advocate. "Instead of listening to the 53 percent of Michigan voters who voted in favor of ethical stem cell research, the opposition wants to ruin the progress that has been made in embryonic stem cell research in Michigan by attaching onerous reporting requirements to the Higher Education Bill ... that will only put a cloud over the research within the state.

3. Texas has put loads of money in higher education over the past 30+ years,
and they do know what happens when you invest in the best researchers. It pays.
Sadly, many universities are losing good people to other states due to underfunding and right-wingnut proposals in their legislatures
