Israeli Cost Of Living Protests Spreading From City To City

BEERSHEBA, Israel (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of people gathered across Israel Saturday to call for lower living costs in an effort to show the government their protest movement has countrywide support.

The gatherings followed a rally last weekend in Tel Aviv, Israel's commercial capital, in which over 250,000 demonstrators called for economic reform. It was the biggest socio-economic protest the country of 7.7 million has ever seen.

Past demonstrations on such a scale in Israel have usually been over issues of war and peace but Saturday rallies from Haifa and Afula in the north of the country to the resort town of Eilat in the far south all focused on "social justice."

Leading Israeli performers entertained the protesters who carried banners highlighting the soaring cost of living.

They see their society collapsing around them while the Israeli government continues to beat the drum of war. We have the same problem in the U.S. where money is siphoned into multi front wars while there is talk of gutting Medicare, Medicaid, and Seocial Security.

7. Most Americans don't know these protests are happening

because of the poor quality of the U.S. media. My quick napkin math shows that 250k protesters out of a population of roughly 7.7 million is about 3% of their population. The U.S. population is around 311,982,000 so that would mean 3% of that would be 9,359,460 people.

And hoping that the people of my country will increasingly follow their example - instead of expressing frustrations by turning on and robbing their fellow citizens, as has sadly been happening recently.
